Okay, so I may have just told Maxxie a huge lie but he didn’t need to know that. I’d just have to do my best to smile and act like Hadley didn’t deserve a good smack for running his mouth. Trust me, that would take a lot of effort on my part. I swear to God, if he said one more thing about John I’d kick his fucking ass.
I had a feeling Max was just using it as something close to blackmail. Almost within the boundaries of revenge but without the whole “you killed my parents, now I’ll kill you!” rage. There was only one thing I could think of that he’d want revenge for: getting him to at least try and make up with his mom. That’s hardly grounds for not beating the shit out of Hadley when he deserves it; mom beats little brother on the scale of importance.
I slipped out of Maxxie’s arms with a small smile and went to go find Mom. She’d no doubt give me the whole “Cayden, I’m disappointed in you. You and Hadley are both adults, you should be able to stay in the same room as each other without fighting” rant but when I did find her, all I got was a sympathetic smile. She put down the plates she was carrying and put a hand on my shoulder.
“You still love him” she said quietly as if she was expecting Maxxie to appear any second.
“What?” Was she crazy? Sure, I still loved John/ I loved him and Maxxie was just something to pass the time. And the three of us would skip through a field of daisies and rainbows and Hadley would show up with cupcakes and we’d have a tea party with the Mad Hatter.
“John-O. You’re still in love with him”
“Mom, I think you’ve been in front of the stove for too long. Go sit down and I’ll-”
“I know what I’m talking about, Cayden!” she snapped then flashed me an apologetic look.
“I love Maxxie”
“And you love John. I can see it in your eyes, you look at them the same way”
“Do not” I pouted. What? There was no way I looked at them the same.
“Yes you do and it’s only a matter of time before Maxxie notices”
“He won’t notice anything because there’s nothing to notice. I love John like a brother, that’s it”
I could tell Mom was biting back a comment about Hadley before she heaved a huge sigh. “Cayden, I saw what John did to you when he broke up with you. I don’t want you doing that to Maxxie, he’s a sweet guy”
She carried on talking after that but I’d stopped paying attention. What if… What if she was right? I mean, weren’t we hugging for like five minutes without letting go? I was kissing his neck and it felt just like all those years ago. In those five minutes it was almost as if I’d never met Maxxie. As if he was still off with Alex somewhere but I was none the wiser since I was loved up with John. And then just now when he’d been pulling me back from Hadley, the feel of his arms round my waist… Shit, I was still fucking in love with him. I’d fucking convinced myself literally a few days before that I’d moved on a long time ago and the only person that mattered anymore was Maxxie. And then boom, I come here and it’s like Maxxie’s second best.
“You’ve finally realised it then” Mom said. Jeez, can she read my mind now?
I was about to answer when Maxxie walked into the room. Shit, how much had he heard?
“Realised what?” he asked, looking around for something to drink.
"Uh... Realised that Mom's Italian sauce comes out of a jar" I said, earning a glare from Mom.
"I don't believe that one for a second," Maxxie laughed.
"Don't believe everything he tells you" Mom said, flashing me a knowing look before going back to her cooking, which smelt almost done.
"Mmm. He told me that Dodge Vipers are sexy cars, but I don't believe that, either," he smiled.
I went into instant sulk mode at that. "They are. Even Hads would agree with me on that one"
He raised one eyebrow. The fact that Hadley liked something I liked obviously isn’t a good enough reason to start liking them.
"Seriously. Once he's calmed down go ask him"
"My opinion on them won't change just because your brother agrees with you."
"What if either or both of the Smith boys were driving one?"
He shook his head, smiling. "I'm afraid it wouldn't make any difference, Cay. I'd just be interested in the person driving it, not the car."
"Then there's no hope for you" I smiled.
"Maybe I should leave you for someone with better taste in cars..." I said, pretending to consider it and he scowled at me. "Y'know what, there's a guy I went to high school with works at a garage round here. Loves Dodges. Asked me out a couple times"
He gave me a half smirk. "I'd have to set Alex on you, if you ran off with someone else."
"Then I'd have to set Hads on Alex, wouldn't I?" I chuckled.
"That could be an interesting fight."
"Maybe we should set it up some time"
Maxxie glanced at Mom before speaking. "I don't think certain parties would be too impressed with who would end up in hospital."
"I wouldn't doubt my boy if I were you, he's floored boxers, wrestlers and God knows what else" Mom said, not looking up from whatever it was she had boiling in a saucepan.
"Mmm. I'm sure Alex would give him a good challenge." Maxxie said. He still seriously thought Alex could beat Hadley in a fight.
"Stop hyping it up, I want to see this now" I said and Mom glared at me.
Maxxie flashed me a half smile. "I'm not hyping up anything."
I pouted for about the fiftieth time that day. He completely ignored my phenomenal pouting skills, kissing me instead. I wrapped my arms around his waist and kissed back, pulling away suddenly to say "Oh, Mom, did John say when he was bringing his cake round?"
Mom just rolled her eyes. Of course she knew why I wanted to know.
Maxxie turned so he was leaning on me and facing Mom at the same time. "Don't let me eat any cake."
"I'll turn into a fat old man. No one wants that," he said, smiling slightly.
"I thought you already were" I smirked.
He elbowed me, forcing yet another pout.
"Mom, Maxxie hurt me"
"Good God, it's like being in a room with two children" Mom said, sounding a little annoyed.
"So didn't." he muttered under his breath.
"Oh my God, you so did"
He turned back to me and started tickling. Normally I don’t get ticklish, it’s one of my many stick insect powers, but through the mindless amounts of sex we’d had he knew exactly where to aim.
"Mommm" I whined, trying not to laugh.
Maxxie just grinned and kept on tickling.
I held out for about a minute before I started laughing, somehow managing to choke out "Maxxie, I swear to God I will punch you"
"That's no way to treat your boyfriend."
"It hardly compares to punching someone." He said and stopped tickling me. He almost sounded… I don’t know, annoyed?
I smoothed out my shirt and said "Thank you" and punched his arm lightly anyway, earning a scowl in response. "You deserve it"
"If you two are going to be disgustingly sweet then please, take it somewhere else" Mom said, an almost annoyed frown on her face.
Maxxie sighed and leant into me. "You're safe. I'm done being cute."
"Either way, get out of my kitchen. It'll be done soon so don't wander off too far" Mom said, sounding more like her usual cheery self.
"Yes, ma'am." Maxxie saluted.
I laughed and pulled Maxxie out of the room, intent on heading for my old room. Mom might’ve laid down her no sex rule but she never said anything about foreplay.
