When Hadley's told he's finally allowed to leave, I should be fucking happy that I've got my fiancé back.
But right now, all I'm doing is mentally preparing myself for Momma Smith screaming her head off. Firstly because she will blame me for letting her baby get stabbed. Secondly, neither of us even told her he was here. Thirdly, the insurance claim is probably gonna be a pretty big one.
"Mrs Smith?" I ask as she picks up the phone.
"What do you want?"
"Um... we need to, uh, to see you," I stutter. Clearly, my mental preparation is not working quite as well as I'd like.
"Health insurance claim," I mumble. She's silent for a while and I bite my lip. "Uh, I'm happy to cover the costs, we just need you to fill in the forms. Look, we're at the hospital, I gotta go."
"I'll see you there," she says, sounding pissed off. She hangs up and I look at Hadley.
"Your mother is quite possibly the most charming woman I've ever met." He laughs a little and I shove my phone in my pocket. "Anyways, you got everything?"
"Yep. I think so, anyway." I put my arm around him, careful not to knock any of the bruises or anything, and he snuggles a little. All we have left to do really, is wait for his mum to come and yell at us.
When she shows up, she completely blanks me, smothering Hadley in a hug. I can't help the flash of worry that no doubt shows on my face as Hadley lets out a quiet ‘ow'.
"What happened? Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, Mom," Hadley tells her. Bets on how long it'll take for her to get it out of one of us, anyone?
"You're not fine, you're in hospital," she says, seeing the bruises on Hadley's neck. She turns to face me with venom in her eyes. Man, she can be fucking scary when she wants to be. "What did you do?"
"Me? What makes you think that I did anything to him?"
"Well, you're the only person he seems to see these days." I grit my teeth. Oh yeah, that's such a logical conclusion to come to. I'm the only person he seems to see, so naturally, I hospitalised him.
"You know you can tell me, right?" she says to Hadley.
"He didn't do anything, Mom."
"Even if I was capable of causing any kind of damage, what makes you think I'd hurt the guy I love?"
"He can't hurt you if you tell me," she continues, ignoring me. Funny, I didn't know telling you something would stop him from getting hurt.
"He didn't do anything ," Hadley insists, getting annoyed. I sigh, trying to keep my own temper in check.
"We can go somewhere else if you don't want to tell me with him around." Why are you so convinced I'm secretly beating him?
"For God's sake, he didn't do anything to me! And if it wasn't for him you wouldn't be paying hospital bills, you'd be planning a funeral." Well, I s'pose you can't keep something like being stabbed a secret forever. Momma Smith looks shocked.
"Hadley, what happened?" she questions.
"It's nothing. Can you just fill the stuff in so we can go?"
"Not until you tell me." Of course.
Pissed off, Hadley gives in and just gets straight to the point. "Fine, I got stabbed. Happy now?" His mum's far from happy, judging by the horrified look on her face.
"Still believe I'm the bad guy here?" I ask, kinda exasperated.
"How do I know it wasn't you that stabbed him?" what, you mean apart from the fact that Hadley just said that if it wasn't for me she'd be planning a funeral...?
"Why the fuck would I stab my own fiancé?" I snap. And then I realise what I just said. "Shit." Nice one, Max.
"...Your what?" I clear my throat and try to brush it off as a slip of the tongue.
"My boyfriend. Look, can we just get these forms filled out so he can rest up?" I don't think I quite convinced her. She kinda glares at me and I arch my eyebrow a little. "What?" She keeps up her kind of glare.
"Then can we fill out these forms, please? Like I said, I'm happy to cover the costs. I'll even compensate you for your time, I just wanna get Hadley home so he can rest." I hand her the forms the nurse gave me earlier and she fills them out, still glaring at me. I just put up with it, though I probably don't look too happy about her glaring. Well who would?
She finishes filling them out, not looking too happy.
"Thank you," I mutter, giving the forms back to the nurse, "if you give me your details, I'll transfer the money to you when we get back home."
"Don't worry about it. Can I speak to you for a second? In private." I sigh and nod, giving in to the inevitable ear bashing I'm about to receive. She goes off to somewhere that Hadley can't see, and I follow, figuring that I don't really have much choice in the matter. She turns her glare back on me.
"If my boy gets hurt once more because of you, you wave goodbye to that ring on his finger," she growls.
"What makes you think I had anything to do with how he got hurt?"
"If he hadn't met you he would've been at home at Caleb's." I don't say anything to that. What is there to be said, really? She's right, I guess. "Exactly," she says as if she's read my mind, "If he gets hurt one more time, he's coming home. I don't care if I have to drag him back, I'll do it."
"I can't control who Hadley does and doesn't talk to," I sigh, "I'm sorry I wasn't there to stop him getting hurt in the first place, but I don't think that blaming it all on me is especially rational, or reasonable."
"Just make sure it doesn't happen again," she snarls, going back over to Hadley. Sure. I'll just lock him up and throw away the key now, shall I?
