The first thing I remember after the ambulance was waking up in a hospital bed and feeling like death. Every inch of me hurt. Even parts of me that hadn’t been punched and/or stabbed hurt. I slowly opened one eye and saw Maxxie sat next to the bed, half asleep and looking maybe a little whacked out on painkillers.
"Maxxie?" I said, extremely quietly. And trust me, it took a lot of effort.
He looked round. "Hadley" he smiled, relief washing over his features.
I smiled back and he took my hand. I shut my eyes a little and felt his thumb stroking the back of my hand.
"I've put you through hell today, huh?" I said, feeling like the world’s shittiest fiancé.
I smiled again. "How long was I asleep?"
He looked at the clock. "Dunno. Long enough for me to give in to them trying to give me painkillers" he smiled.
I laughed a little, wincing a tiny bit as a wave of pain flowed through my stomach. Maxxie squeezed my hand a little and I knew I didn’t look happy.
"What's wrong?" Maxxie asked and I sighed a tiny bit.
"I should've fought back"
He pecked me on the lips. "It's not your fault*
"I know. But I could've done more"
"Don't beat yourself up over it. You're alive, that's what matters"
I smiled at him.
"I've got your ring" he said, digging through his pocket.
I looked up while he searched for it. Once he found it, he slipped it onto my finger and I sort of grinned, pulling him over for a kiss. He kissed me and I hummed as I kissed back. He sat back and sort of frowned a little.
“What made you take it off in the first place?"
"It's stupid, doesn't matter"
I stayed silent and he stroked my cheek.
"I just wanna know. I'm not gonna get mad"
I was quiet for a while. "I thought maybe you..."
He held my hand. "Maybe I what?"
"Asked me to marry you cause you weren't over Cayden"
He looked kind of shocked but recovered pretty quickly. "No" he smiled and kissed my forehead.
"Told you it was stupid" I mumbled.
He chuckled a little bit. "I care about him, but as a good friend. It's you I love"
I smiled and he smiled back. I shifted a little in bed and winced again. Maxxie looked a tiny bit worried and I sighed in annoyance.
"I think it hurt less when I was back at Mark's place"
"Don't you have one of those morphine pumps?"
I shrugged a little and he kissed me. I kissed back and giggled a little.
"Nope, still hurts"
"Want me to get a nurse?"
"Won't morphine make me sleepy?"
"Yeah, but it's better than being in pain, gorgeous"
"I'd rather be in pain and talking to you" I smiled.
"I don't want you to be in pain" he said, sounding a little worried.
I smiled a little. "I haven’t seen you for like three days, Maxxie, I can deal with a bit of pain for now" I said but something told me he’d still be worried. "How's Alex? He didn't get hurt, did he?"
"Nothing worse than he'd have gotten in a cage fight" he smiled and I shut my eyes.
He stroked my forehead and I sighed contentedly as he played with my hair.
"I want a cuddle" I mumbled.
"Am I okay to sit in the bed with you?"
I nodded and he sat in the bed with me, cuddling me gently. I cuddled back harder than I probably should have, ignoring the slight twinge in my stomach. He kissed me and I kissed back, starting to feel a little tired all of a sudden. He nuzzled my neck carefully but accidentally caught one of my many bruises. I held back a wince but couldn’t keep back the few tears that rolled over my cheeks. I was hurting too much to car if I looked stupid or over-emotional.
Maxxie pecked me on the lips. "What's up, Bunny?"
I sniffled. "I just wanna cuddle you but everywhere hurts"
"I can get the nurse to give you some morphine and then you can cuddle me all you like"
I hummed a little. "Don't let me fall asleep"
"I won't" he said and went off to find a nurse.
