When Dad found me he naturally asked what had happened. And when I didn’t answer, he knew not to push it. Mom, however, pestered me until I snapped out that me and Maxxie had split up. And of course she instantly blamed him.
“I knew that boy was no good. The second he walked through the door I knew he was trouble. Breaking both my boys’ hearts, I ought a wring his neck”
After about two hours of that I couldn’t take it anymore. So I spent the day hiding in my room. I heard Mom bitching about Maxxie to Dad when they headed up to bed and ended up crying myself to sleep.
The next day I should’ve been excited. It was Halloween, my favourite holiday. But I felt like crap. I didn’t even consider leaving my room til Mom left for work and even then it was only to get a soda and maybe something to eat. I was still in the kitchen when Cayden burst through the door. When Dad wouldn’t answer him, it didn’t take him more than two seconds to work out I was in the kitchen.
“Hadley, what the fuck did you do?” he asked, trying not to shout.
“I did it for you” I mumbled seeing Maxxie behind him.
“Did it for me? How does this benefit me in any way?”
“I didn’t want you to be upset”
“It didn’t upset me. Hadley, you’re being an idiot”
“No I’m not. This is just your meds talking… this is for the best”
“Why d’you have to blame the meds for what he’s saying?” Maxxie asked quietly.
“Because he doesn’t know what he’s talking about” I said, glancing at Cayden who scowled.
Maxxie, however, looked sort of stung and I bit my lip.
“Hadley, you’re being stupid” Cayden said.
I’m being fucking serious, Cayden.
Maxxie sighed and looked at the floor. “It’s your choice, Hadley”
I sniffled and he looked up. A few tears rolled down my cheeks but I wasn’t properly crying. Yet.
“It’s for the best” I managed to say.
Maxxie hesitated before hugging me. I didn’t hug back straight away because frankly it was breaking my heart. I gave in, though, when Maxxie bit his lip. I stood in his arms, desperately trying to stop the odd tears that were falling from my eyes. I could tell Maxxie was fighting back tears as well.
“Hadley, stop being a moron and just get back with him” Cayden said softly.
“I can’t” I said quietly.
Maxxie let go and moved back. He opened his mouth to say something but changed his mind. I sniffled again and bit my lip.
“Whatever it is, say it” Cayden said bluntly.
“I love you, Hadley. But this is your choice, not mine”
“I still want you, Maxxie”
Cayden pulled at his hair in frustration.
“Well, I’m all yours. You know that”
“I know” I sniffled “But I can’t”
He looked back at the floor and kind of mumbled “I should go, this is just making it worse”
“Maxxie, you take one fucking step and I’ll kill you” Cayden snapped. Maxxie stayed where he was and Cayden turned to me, “Why can’t you get back with him?”
I mumbled an answer and Maxxie sort of looked up. They both know why.
“Didn’t quite catch that, kiddo” Cayden said and I mumbled again.
Maxxie waited for me to say it properly so I eventually mumbled to Cayden “I don’t want to hurt you”
“Told you he cares about you” Maxxie muttered under his breath.
“I’m doing my best to be patient here, Hads. It’s not hurting me”
Maxxie was quiet and I didn’t say anything either.
“Jesus, Hadley! If you guys want to be together, I’m happy for you. If you wanna get married, I’ll be your fucking flower girl. And if he hurts you, I’ll be here for you. What part of that sounds hurt?”
“Hadley?” Maxxie asked when I said nothing.
I didn’t answer him since I was still kind of crying. Maxxie bit his lip and hugged me again. I hugged back, still trying to convince myself it was for the best. Maxxie looked up at Cayden and kind of smiled. I didn’t see what Cayden did.
“Whaddya say? Can we give this another shot?”
I started crying again like a girl but hugged him tighter as my answer. Maxxie hugged me tighter too and I sniffled. He buried his head in my shoulder and I sniffled again, trying to stop crying.
He kissed my shoulder and mumbled “Love you”
“I love you so fucking much”
He kissed me and I kissed back, giggling slightly. He looked at me curiously and I wiped a thumb across his cheek.
“Your face is all wet now”
“I don’t care” he looked up at Cayden, “thank you”
Cayden had an arm round his chest. Was it still hurting him that much? “Don’t mention it”
“C’mon, let’s get you back to hospital” Maxxie said and Cayden nodded, wincing.
Maxxie took my hand and helped Cayden out to the car. He only just made it, lying down on the backseat and wincing again. I’m pretty sure Maxxie broke a speed limit or two driving back to the hospital. And something told me he was more than willing to carry Cayden inside if he had to…
