What a tiring day. First the meeting, where we were offered money for the job, then a long talk with the rest of the team. Not to get to know each other of course, but to discuss plans.
And I wasn't too keen on getting to know them. Valerie Hamilton was part of ou team. VALERIE HAMILTON. That could cause some problems if our past got in the way.
Then there was this Matthew Gellar who had been assigned to lead us. He was someone who I would not want to get in the way of. He didn't seem, outwardly or conversationally, like someone who could do a whole load of damage to anyone, but to the trained eye there was power there. He was dangerous. Something told me he might have a short fuse, the something I'd gleaned from the occassional glances of annoyance and twitches of his fingers while people talked about unimportant things.
VALERIE HAMILTON?? I mean seriously. Who messed up when they looked in to our past and didn't notice that we should never be put together?
I closed my door a little louder than usual and stormed through my kitchen. Valerie. Valerie. Valerie. Every step seemed to stamp her name on my brain. How annoying!
I collapsed on my bed too tired to care about anything but sleep. Why was this happening to me? Sure, I knew I'd been picked for the job because I was good, one of the best obviously, but why had she been picked as well.
I resolved that dwelling on the subject any more would be foolish. So I turned to my right and closed my eyes, ready to sleep.
A sound outside disturbed me. I was up in a flash, grabbing the curved metal blades I had created myself and fitting them on to my hands. I slipped over to the window and peered out.
"Hello." Matthew Gellar stood on my balcony.
"What do you want?" I asked, not lowering my fists.
"I want to know why you were chosen to be in this team. I haven't got access to your files, nor anyone elses, and I want to know why you were picked for this team."
"I guess I'm good at what I do. Why were you picked to be our leader?"
"The same I guess. Second question..."
"...I'm tired. Questions can wait until when we meet again tomorrow."
"Just one more. What is it that makes you and Valerie Hamilton hate each other? I saw the looks you were giving."
"You're lucky it was only looks. But that's between the two of us. And it won't get in the way of our mission, if I can help it. As soon as this is over, I'm going to be out of here, and I'm pretty sure she will be too."
"Why? What happened between the two of you? As your leader I should know."
"Well as our leader you'll have to find out some other way. I'm going to bed. Goodnight." I shut the window and went back to my bed.
I kept the curved knives under my pillow, just in case.
