The building in front of Miles emitted a somewhat impressive boom, then fell silent again. Seconds later, two men and a woman came rushing out the door, waving their arms and running his way. He stopped, wondering what was going on, and the younger of the two men, looking to be somewhere near his early twenties, shouted to him.
"Go!" he yelled. "Move it! Run!"
Miles did as instructed, and ran with the group until they stopped a few minutes later. He had to rest for a moment, then he asked the man that had spoken to him before, "What happened? What was that all about?"
"Well, that man doesn't really like raiders, so we thought we'd say hello and get to know him better. Unfortunately, he didn't like us much better than he likes most of our kind, so we left him a present on his doorstep and left."
"In other words, you attacked a Dome citizen and used explosives in his home before retreating and getting away?"
The man was silent for just a moment. Then he said lightheartedly, "Yeah, pretty much."
Miles felt he belonged with this group suddenly, and he said, "Nice! Wish I'd shown up a little quicker!"
The man looked at him again for a moment and said, "You're not one of us, are you?"
"Depends who you are."
"You know very well who we are. Are you one of us?"
"No, not really. But I observed your group going in and came to get inside the walls."
"So you live on the outside."
"Yeah, I used to."
"Well, maybe this is your chance to start over."
"Yeah, maybe." Miles sat down on the ground and stared at his boots. Before he knew it, the others were standing and the young man was telling them it was time to go. Miles figured the invitation did not extend to him.
Until the man looked back at him and said, "Hey, are you coming? We've got to go if you are."
Miles grinned and stood to join them.
