I roll my eyes, could he have taken any longer or been any noisier? I was tapping my foot when he got round the corner and I looked at him for a moment, a slight smile on my face as I notice he got shot. Also he was covered in blood, well, someone got brutal. I sheath my sword and motion for him to follow. It was just a straight corridor, two guards stood outside but I made them turn and shoot each other, muffling the sound with a vision. “Four more inside, two on the inside of the door, two on the opposite side of the room, watching the door; what d’ya wanna do?” I ask.
"I can freeze them while you get Alice and I'll deal with them once you get her outside," it was an alright plan but, if she was tied to a chair I’d have to work the knots and that could take a while.
"Can't you give them all heart attacks at the same time?" I wondered that way Alice wouldn’t see anything graphic and they’d all be dealt with.
"You'd still have to get her out, I'm still getting used to that heart attack thing. I'd give everyone in the room one, and that would include Alice," Luca’s useless.
"Fine," I nodded, kicking open the door. The guards froze and I grab Alice, slicing through the relatively thin rope with my sword, luckily it was only her hands. I picked her up and carried her outside. She mustn’t have realised who I was because she kicked and she screamed to be let down.
I did as she wished as after another few screams, not from Alice, Luca came from the room. Instantly Alice shouted his name, flinging herself at him. That hurt, a lot. I don’t really know how to begin telling you how much that hurt. Let’s just say the knife she implanted in me when she said she hated me. It was still turning.
"Hey beautiful, It's Gemme you should be hugging," he muttered, kissing her gently on the forehead, leaving a bloodstain. He tried to wipe it away but it smeared and he sighed.
She shook her head, "no, the knight, the knight came to save me!" She called and I sheathed my sword, sighing before walking away at a brisk pace.
"The phoenix came to save you. The knight just tagged along," he picked her up and caught up with me.
"No, the knight came. The knight conquered the demons here. The knight saved the princess." I whispered. I might as well tell her what she obviously wanted to hear.
"He wouldn't have been able to do it without the Phoenix, though."
"You give me too much credit," Don’t.
"Well I wouldn't have been able to find this place, would I? I wouldn't have had a clue where to go."
"If I didn't leave her, this wouldn't have happened. It was my fault she was captured, my fault the driver died, my fault, Alice. Sorry."
"It's not your fault, Gemme," he said, taking my hand, "you can't be expected to watch over everyone all the time, it's not your job."
"I should! I should be able to keep everyone I love, safe!" I stopped, twisting to face him. I should be able to look after Luca and keep Alice safe. No wonder she hates me! No wonder she doesn’t want me anywhere near her! I’ve let her down too many times before.
He squeezed my hand gently, his eyes soft, despite the blood on him. "We can only try our best, Gemme," he murmured, "I should be looking after the both of you, but like I said, I just tagged along. If I hadn't been coming down, I wouldn't have come at all."
"I know and if I hadn't had left you the first time you wouldn't be depending on drugs and once again that's my fault.” I shook my head, tearing my hand from his. "It's not a wonder why she hates me." I growled, sprinting up the stairs and emerging back into the forest.
"It was my choice to do the drugs, Gemme; it's not your fault!" He called in my head, chasing after me as best he could while holding onto Alice.
"Take her back to the bus Luca; you'll both be safe there." I commanded him.
"And what about you?"
"You'll be safe."
"Please don't do anything stupid Gemme. Please."
"I'll try," to be honest, I didn’t know what I was going to do. I don’t think it was going to be anything stupid. I just needed time alone, to think. Heck, I might not even get back on that bus... I dunno.
He put Alice down for a moment, pulling me into a hug. "I love you, Gemme. I'll try harder not to screw things up next time," he mumbled into my hair.
I clenched my jaw together and screwed my eyes shut as I whimpered, trying not to cry into his shoulder. "I... I love you too.”
He moved back, his hands on my shoulders as he looked at me, trying to smile. "My gorgeous phoenix that saved the day," he murmured.
I shook my head again, wiping a stray tear from my cheek. "No, you give me too much credit."
"I beat up a few guards and stole your..." he paused, searching for the right word, "glory? No, that's not right. You know what I mean."
"Take Alice, back to the, bus." I stuttered, my voice breaking.
"Please come back with us, Gemme?"
I shook my head, "I dunno. I just don't know."
"Go, Luca." I sighed, collapsing with my back against a great big oak tree, I crossed my legs in front of me and closed my eyes.
His face set in an unhappy expression as he picked Alice up again before moving to kiss me gently on the cheek. "Love you." I turned my other cheek, not opening my eyes.
