Code Names

Cara Riesling – 4 hours until impact

Valyria knew better than to push for more.

“I’m just glad she’s alive. Let’s keep moving.”

“No,” Raygo said, “I have to know. Did you get it all back?”

Cara shrugged.

“It’s like a swiss cheese. I have the gist of it but I know there are parts missing.”

“Did we…know each other before?” he asked, blinking.

“They kept us from talking, but we did some training together.”

“Did you see anything about me or Valyria?”

Cara shut her eyes and sighed.

“I don’t…it’s hard to say. We were kept separate for most of what I saw.”

“Raygo, stop harassing her.” Valyria commanded, “She’s hardly in a condition to be answering your questions.”

He sighed in exasperation.

“Fine.”

Cara looked towards the machine and realized with a start that it was charred.

“What happened there?”

“You kinda zapped it.” Valyria offered, “They probably had you knocked out the first time to keep that from happening.”

“Wait…that means…” Cara started, looking guilty.

“Don’t worry about it, kid.” Valyria dismissed, “Judging by what you said, we’re better off without those memories.”

Cara looked at the floor, before sliding off of the bed.

She made a face, staring at her shoes.

“Guys, is it just me, or am I floating?”

Valyria looked at her feet and gaped.

“Definitely floating.”

Cara felt a realization hit her.

“Most of the station is made of metal. I remember…training for this…”

“So, by pushing off of the floor and walls you can…” Valyria started, still watching her bobbing shoes.

“Fly. Pretty much.”

“Now that is unfair.” Valyria smirked good-naturedly, pulling out the blueprints, “But it’ll probably come in handy. We still have some ground to cover.”

She went out into the hallway, and Cara followed, floating through the doorway.

Raygo lingered behind them as they walked, but Cara was too exhilarated to notice.

With her memories, she had been given an entirely new degree of control. Years of fine-tuning and repetition had been returned to her. She barely had to think to make her powers work.

She made loop-de-loops in the hall, giddy with the ease of it.

“Quit showing off, Magneto.” Valyria muttered, trying to keep the smile off of her face.

“You know something?” Cara laughed, “I’m actually starting to like being called that.”

“Well, how about you give me an impressively cool code name in return?” Valyria suggested, throwing her hair over a shoulder.

“Um…how about…Asparagus?”

“Ew!”

“Plant…woman?”

“That’s so bad…”

“Poison Ivy?”

“That sounds like a hooker’s name.”

“Er…Beanstalk?”

“Don’t. Even.”

“Touch-me-not!”

“Aw, come on.”

Cara grinned.

“It’s genius! Touch-me-not!”

“Fine.” Valyria muttered, before glancing back, “What about Raygo?”

“Hot and Cold?” Cara suggested, watching him move listlessly, unaware of their conversation.

Valyria laughed.

“I guess that’s a working name then.”

The announcement loop started again and Cara scrunched up her face in thought.

“You know, I’ve realized something.”

“What?”

“Ark Space Station…” Cara started, “If you had an acronym for it…”

“It would be ASS.” Valyria supplied, sending them both into a laughing fit.

Cara grabbed her stomach and for a few precious seconds almost forgot they could be her last.

The End
