Cara Riesling – 11 hours until impact
Cara walked into the hall, her hands stuffed into her pockets.
She’d managed to scrounge a black hoodie, a baggy shirt and even baggier jeans from the closet.
It felt like wearing a potato sack, but at least she didn’t smell quite as much like sewage.
Raygo had also decided to change and had been luckier in terms of sizes. In the sense that his clothes actually remotely seemed to fit.
Valyria came into the hall and Cara and Raygo started walking, already accustomed to the constant need to move.
“You got fresh clothes?” Valyria gaped, in annoyed disbelief, “Why didn’t I get the memo?”
“You were in the bathroom, so instead of waiting around we made use of the time.” Raygo replied, as if it were obvious.
“Well can we at least stop for a minute so I can get some?”
“You can do whatever you want. We are going to find the gym.” Cara said flatly, pulling up her hood.
“Yes.” Raygo and Cara replied at the same time, in a tone that suggested the conversation was over.
Valyria mumbled something incoherent under her breath, but soon after the three were silent. In a show of defiance Valyria quickened her pace so that she could walk ahead of the two of them.
After a few moments passed Raygo nudged Cara with an elbow, gesturing towards Valyria with his head and giving her a look that had a very clear suggestion.
Cara narrowed her eyes in an obvious refusal and returned her gaze to the hall in front of them.
She felt Raygo nudge her again but didn’t bother turning to face him.
If there was one thing Valyria wasn’t getting, it was an apology. Or anything close to an apology. Cara was more than tired of being pushed around-
Raygo nudged her again.
She resisted the urge to roll her eyes.
Without turning to look at him, Cara nudged him back.
And quickly started a nudging contest.
Raygo got her in the ribs and she yelped, but when they both turned to Valyria she was still walking, not so much as slowing down.
Cara punched him in the shoulder as punishment. He pulled a face, recoiling in mock pain.
“Is that the gym?”
They both turned, seeing the massive glass doors at the same time.
“That has to be it.” Raygo breathed, walking towards them and trying the handle.
“Are you kidding me?” Valyria muttered, “We might as well sit here and wait for death to come.”
Cara inspected the doors, finding a small panel on the wall.
“It looks like it would take some kind of access card.”
Raygo reached into his pocket and pulled something out.
Cara took it and looked at him incredulously.
“Where did you get this?”
“It was already in these pants.”
Cara smiled and swiped the shining plastic through the panel, waiting.
After a few seconds it beeped and flashed a green light. Raygo reached towards the door and it opened easily.
He held it open as Cara walked through, and she entered the room with an added spring to her step.
“Thank you, kind sir.”
“A trivial matter, my lady.”
The lights flickered to life, and Cara was rendered speechless.
“Holy mother of…”
