After hearing about the news of Apex and how he failed the exam, I was worried. I ran to the hospital almost immediately and found him to be lying in rest. The nurse was there, and we just talked about what was going to happen next.
"He'll have to retake another period of schooling."
"Well, that means that him and I will take the next exam at the same time."
"But, this will hurt him, he'll be scared for this."
"But he can't let it get him down, he saved me. He's strong, I believe in him. I have faith."
The nurse faintly smiles at me, then goes back to tending to Apex. "If only he was as sure as you were."
I nod in agreement, then I let silence take over. We just sort of stood there for a while, waiting for when he would wake up. Then, something amazing happens, his eyes open and he sits up in bed.
"Draniei? What are you doing here? What am I doing here? What time is it?"
The nurse pushes him into lying down again and speaks first.
"Hey, well at the exam you took some pretty heavy hits, I'm sure you already know that. Draniei was worried, so he came over. But, I have some bad news."
"What bad news?"
"You're going to have to retake another period of school."
In his eyes, I will never forget, was the look of pure sadness and rejection.
"More schooling, I see." He paused, "I guess I have to get up so that I can train."
The nurse's eyes widen, "Oh, no, no, no, not at all. You need more rest before you attempt any magic of any kind, child."
"No, I can do it." He says as he sits up sharply, his hand goes to his side in instinct at the pain. "Ah!"
"See, you need to sleep, you need to rest. Draniei will just have to leave and come back."
I look at her in curiosity. She can't tear me apart from my best friend. He saved my life, I have to save his.
"Umm, Mary," I said, speaking to the nurse, "I'll go talk to Katherine, the villiage spirit healer, I'll send her over with an ointment for Apex. So that he can heal faster, will that be OK?"
"Yes, that would be great, thank you, Draniei."
I nod with excitement and practically fly down the stairs on my way out. I'll get to help, Apex, it'll be the best ever!
Then, I left, running to Katherine, the villiage spirit healer.
