His name fell from my lips and everything else faded away. The fight, the demons, the faces of my companions. Everything was a blur but the form of the warlock as he crumpled to the ground.
It was over as soon as it had started. There came an explosion of light and a terrible snarl, and then Scott, his minions, and the demons were gone. Silence overcame us. Silence and darkness.
I realized Adder had a grip upon my forearm, however light it might have been. I ripped free from him, ran across the room through the debris and corpses. Collapsed onto my knees at Demrin's side. His expression was one of mangled pain; only short, gasping breaths moved through his mouth.
"Demrin," I whispered, trailing my fingers over his sleeved arm, across his collarbone. But it was too late. He was already gone.
I might have stayed there forever, wondering why the world had to be so unfair. "He didnt fucking deserve this!" I shrieked in a wave of hysteria. "He did this for us, and for what? We're nothing without him. We cant win this without him!"
"Calla." There came a hand upon my shoulder. Adder. I mustered the energy to look up into the eyes of my lover. He was holding a hand out to me, which I took, letting him pull me to my feet. Adder took me into his arms and held me to his chest, where I continued to cry.
"It's alright, love," Adder whispered into my hair. His body was tense against my own. I didnt reply for there was nothing to say, only continued to hold him and draw what strength I could from him.
A few moments passed before I pulled away, surveying the disastrous room. We would need to work all night to clean the mess up. On the other side of the chaos, Ana and Jester stood hand in hand. Neither of them spoke, not even when I met their eyes. Where Demrin had laid only minutes before, there was nothing.
"Is this the end?" Ana said eventually in a voice so small I barely heard it.
Beside me, Adder shook his head. "No, darling, I fear this is only the beginning."
