It was midnight.
Our bags were packs, only the absolute necessities. I stared wistfully at the pile of discarded clothes on Demrin's bedroom floor.
Beside me, the warlock rolled his eyes. "We'll get you new clothes, Calla," he said, only a trace of harshness in his voice. I knew it wasnt directed at me; my friend was just worried. Scared. Something he would never, ever admit.
I'd wanted to take a plane, I really had. Something about flying seemed so much more spontaneous. Scott would be expecting us to perform a spell. To use magic to get out of our current state of paranoia. But Demrin had insisted that arranging flights would be too time consuming. And so there we were, gathered in his apartment and ready to leave the only life we'd known.
Adder came up behind me, placed his hand lovingly on my forearm. "It'll be okay, love," he murmured in a voice meant only for my ears. "Everything will be okay."
I knew that he was making a promise he couldnt really keep. Adder couldnt control Scott, or what the neceromancer decided to do. All he could do was try to keep me safe. Try to keep us all safe.
A wave of nausea overcame me then. I squeezed my eyes shut against the pain. It had been much too long since I'd fed, and it was starting to take a toll on my body. I was scared for myself, for the tremors of pain that sometimes moved through me. Scared for the way I felt like I was losing control when Adder slid his hands across my body.
But feeding now would have felt to me like some great betrayal to my lover.
"Where's Ana?" Demrin said suddenly, breaking through the endless circles of thoughts I ran. I looked around the apartment, only now realizing that she wasnt here. Had she ever been here? God, I could be so self absorbed sometimes.
"Last I saw her was with that one guy, at the pub..." Adder let his voice trail off. I watched as they exchanged a glance, and their eyes both went wide.
"Scott," Demrin whispered. But at that exact moment, the door flew open and there she was. her expression was something of immense fear, of a terror I'd never known."Ana, what happened?" The warlock demanded.
She took a deep, uneven breath. "My brother..." She cried. Tears began to spill from her eyes. "He's joined up with Scott. He tried to kill me."
I felt myself gasp, a sharp intake of breath through my teeth. Adder's touch upon my arm, once loving, now turned to a fiercely protective grip. "We need to go," he said. "We need to go now."
