Alex staggered out of the washroom and looking at his retreating back, I couldn't help but feel resentment towards Mirry and her callous attitude. I glared at her but didn't say anything for fear that I would be too harsh in the heat of the moment, and then followed Alex out. His feet were faltering as he tried to take the support of the banister leading out towards the back gardens. I put my hand on the small of his back as I guided him down three steps and into a corner of the lush lawns.
Maybe he wants some air, I thought to myself as I helped him sit on a stone bench in a cool corner of the garden. Faint sounds of music wafted from the windows above us and the cloudy sky made the weather even more inviting. I sat beside him and kept my intent gaze on his face, looking for signs of any sickness or discomfort.
He cleared his throat and leaned against the back of the bench and said to me, "Sapphire, I'm really sorry if I got you into any trouble with your friend. I mean, I hadn't realized that I was in the girls' washroom. I'm sorry."
I laid a hand on his clenched fist and soothed his remorse," It's okay, Alex. She was in a pissy mood anyways. I'm gonna have to talk to her, but I don't think it is me you should be worried about. It's Mirry who's in all sorts of trouble. Believe me."
"Yeah, she was a tad insane in there. Maybe something's bothering her."
"Yeah, I know what that is. Anyways, you shouldn't worry about that when you are clearly not fine. Let me just find Mirry and then I'll accompany you back to your place. You're fine with that?"
"I don't want to be a bother, you know. I mean, I'll go myself. It's okay." He tried to get up but staggered and then slumped back in his place. "Or maybe, you could help me? Ummm...like you said you would."
"It's okay, Alex. Either ways, parties are not really my scene. I'll just go tell Mirry. You'll be alright, yeah?"
"Yeah, yeah. I'll be waiting right here. You are an amazing person, Sapphire. Really." Having said that, he leaned in towards me and planted a sloppy kiss on my cheek.
My face felt as if on fire, and I mumbled something inaudible and jumped up from the bench. Tracing my way back inside where the party was in full swing, I caressed my cheek where Alex had kissed it and felt my heart skip a beat.
Oh! Alex, I thought to myself as I entered the noisy, dark room.
