From unpublished story, Phoenix Fire
"Hey, Phoenix!" I shout. The girl with flame red hair turns to look at me.
"Who are you?" she says, looking warily at me.
"Well, I have one name and a few nicknames, but you'll know me as Element, Phoenix," I reply, smiling.
"How do you know my name? Where do I know you from?" she asks.
"I'm your author," I say.
"I'm a character?" she asks.
I sigh, get out my notepad and write
Phoenix and Element stood looking at each other for a second when suddenly the scene melted into the cafe above Waterstones. Two hot chocolates were on the table in front of them.
I look up at Phoenix, who is looking at her drink in alarm. I smile and eat the cream of the top if mine.
"So, Phoenix how's life?" I ask. I may have written her but I don't know everything.
"Well, not so good. My best friend's in hospital in a coma and this weird guy in blue is stalking me," she says, the annoyance showing clearly on her face. Hmm, have to change that. I really need to stop being so evil to my characters.
"Hmm, anything good you'd like to happen?" I ask. She thinks about this for a minute before answering. Well so would I if I could make anything happen.
"Well, I don't know. I'd quite like that guy to stop stalking me. And something magic, if I'm in a story," she says.
"Sure thing, Phoenix. I'll see you soon," I say. She finishes her chocolate and leaves. I go downstairs and look at Garth Nix's new book.
