Alannah: The Missing Link

Why does the team have this annoying talent of disappearing whenever I need them?  Mendrick was in hospital and God knows where Randall and Charlie were.  I had no one to help me.  Great.

The office was starting to grew steadily darker as I sat at my desk staring at the case file that was open in front of me.  It was like a jigsaw I couldn't piece together, like there was a piece I was missing, something I couldn't see.

"Coffee," I said to myself.  "I need coffee."

The office was deserted as I made my way towards the coffee machine in the hall.  I didn't like the quiet, it made me nervous.  I preferred the room when it was filled with noise and people running around in a panic; it was what I was used to.  No one in our CBI unit was organised; we all revelled in chaos.

I took my polystyrene cup filled with steaming hot coffee back to my desk and looked at the papers again.  Something was definitely missing.  The link between Mendrick and the Lawrence's.  This was clearly more complex than any other case I had ever worked on and I was hitting a brick wall.  Mendrick was the only person who could tell me why this was happening.  Who could be holding a grudge against both Mendrick and Lawrence?  Was there even a connection between the two?  Or was Mendrick just the wrong cop in the wrong place at the wrong time?

Just as I started thinking about how on earth Mendrick got himself into such a mess my phone started ringing and made me jump out of my seat.  I scrambled around to try and find it so I could pick it up before it stopped ringing.

"Hello, Alannah Harrison speaking," I said briskly when I eventually pressed the green button.

"Hey Alannah, it's George."

"How did you get this number?"  I asked, shocked and a little scared to hear the techie's voice on the other end of the phone.

"Mendrick asked me to call you, he wants to see you.  I'm at the hospital with him now."

"Can't I come see him in the morning?"  I asked.  "I'm trying to figure out what the kidnappers want, nothing seems to fit and with Charlie and Randall going awol I'm struggling."

"Then you'll definitely want to get down here as soon as possible," George insisted.  "I can't tell you the details but Randall came to see Mendrick tonight.  He tried to kill us."

"What?"  I exclaimed.  "You're lying, Randall is as sane as they come.  He might be a little eccentric but he would never try to kill anyone."

"Tell that to the bullet wound in my shoulder."

There was silence on the line as I tried to work out what I had just been told in my head.  Randall tried to kill Mendrick.  God knows I've thought of killing my boss myself enough times but I would never actually do it.

"And there's one more thing," George said a little more cautiously.  "Randall's dead.  And I was the one who killed him."

The End
