David: Try Me.

Well hasn't this been an eventful day. The police have recently picked up those thugs off the side of the highway. Surprising. Usually when these kinds of things happen, the thugs just...vanish.

Fortunately, I've had a little bit of luck with the kidnapping. I have a very strong lead, and have a feeling I'm getting close to closing this case. Hopefully everything goes as planned. But when does it ever?

Unfortunately, I can't say that I've had any luck with finding Charlie. I must say, even though she left me on the side of the road to rot, I feel worried for her. Very worried. What if there are more guys in white vans driving around. What if---

My thoughts are interrupted by King, who's calling my name. "Yes?" I ask, my attention very divided between him, and the loud voices that are still echoing in my head.

"You aren't going to believe who we found tied up in the back of that van."

"Well, I sure hope it's Mrs. Lawrence and the kid," I say with a laugh.

"Next best thing."

I turn. "And who might that be?"

My eyes widen and my jaw drops. "You have got to be kidding me."

He wasn't. Charlie was tied up in the back of the van. She's alive. Beat up, but alive. I'm thrilled, but I can't allow my excitement to show.

"Broker," I say formally as I approach her. She's leaning against the van for balance. Even with all the blood and sweat, she still is as beautiful as ever.

Charlie gives me a look that says she's not very excited to see me. "Hello, Mendrick," she says with a scowl. All of a sudden, her fist slams into my jaw sending me flying through the air, then slamming into the ground.

For a moment, there's awkward silence. Charlie doesn't look like she wants to apologize, instead, she continues to lean against the van.

I start to sit up, and it's then that the pain really kicks in. First of all, my jaw hurts like heck. Second of all, I'm quite sure that my spine is now located in my left leg. And that's more painful than it sounds.

I groan quietly as I stand. My eyes shift to Randall, who is obviously suppressing a smile. "You want one, too?" I ask him with a glare.

He clears his throat. "No sir, of course not."

"I thought not," I said with a sigh.

I nod to Broker and head back into the house, trying not to limp. Looks like Charlie is still pissed off at me.

"Mr. Mendrick," Mr. Lawrence calls.

I turn to face him. "Yes---"

"The men are here."

"Sounds good. I'll just call Alannah to---"

"No, no. This is too important to be handed over to an amateur."

"Amateur?" I say. Did he just call one of my agents an amateur? Wrong day to piss me off, man.

"Yes. You are more experienced, are you not?"

"That doesn't matter. I can assure you that all of my agents are very capable at handling interrogations."

Mr. Lawrence laughs. "Well, I won't stand for it. I want you handling the interrogation."

I step closer to him and give him a long, intimidating glare. "That's not your call."

Mr. Lawrence blinks. "Obviously you are an amateur as well, if you truly believe that."

Fury burns my veins. At first, I only had irritation for this man. But now, it is much more than that. I grab onto his shirt and pull him close. "If you continue talking to me like that, I'm going to take you outside and show you that I'm not an amateur. I'm going to show you every move that I learned from my hand-to-hand combat lessons. I'm going to show you what it feels like to be pummeled into the dirt. Last but not least, I'm going to show you how to shut your mouth. And if you insist on being disrespectful, I'm going to beat some respect into your thick skull!"

Fear is in Mr. Lawrence's eyes, and I take pleasure in seeing it run across his entire body in a tremble.

"And if you don't believe me, try me. Because I would love it."

I push him back. "Now if you'll excuse me, I have two women to save."

I walk past him, our shoulders brushing for only a second. I don't look back, but I know he's upset. Anyone would be. But he wouldn't dare try taking me off the case now. And if he does, I will do everything that I said I'd do. And if you don't believe me, try me.

Because I would love it.

The End
