Charlie and I went out for a late lunch, and it went pretty well. We didn't talk much though. To be completely honest, it was difficult for us to take our hands, or our lips for that matter, off of each other. Come to think of it, I don't even remember eating.
That explains why I'm so hungry.
I pick up a file on my desk and skim through it. Useless. I toss it into a corner and sigh. I feel like I'm losing my touch. I usually get a lead on a case within the first 48 hours. So far, nothing. This is embarrassing. I'm supposedly leading the best unit in the CBI, and I haven't even began to find any leads whatsoever.
I pick up another file. This one is even more useless than the last. I drop it on my desk and stand. There has to be something I can do that's useful.
I walk outside of my office and down to where she's working. I knock. No answer. Lightly and quietly, I push the door open. There she is. Asleep. I smile and step closer to her.
She looks so tired. She deserves a break, but I can't give her one, or everyone's going to think I've gone soft. And I most certainly have not.
Well, I don't think I have anyway.
Okay. Fine, I've gone soft. But I'm doing my best to harden back to the way I was.
I gently kiss Charlie on the forehead and turn to leave.
Surprisingly, Alannah's standing at the door. She doesn't look happy. I'm not sure if it's because I just kissed Charlie's forehead, or for some other reason. So I quickly say, "Any leads?"
Alannah says nothing for a moment. She looks behind me at Charlie, and then back at me. "None."
I sigh. "Alannah, what's going on?"
She doesn't reply. Instead, she deflects the question. "Do you want me to go and interview anyone else?"
My heart suddenly hardens, and the world goes black. Alannah is the only one I see, the only one I think about. And then, she's gone too. She vanishes into thin air. My mind spins, and images of the Knight echo in my head. I grab my head in confusion, and feel woozy. I stumble, and a hand grabs me.
"Are you okay?!" Alannah shrieks.
My vision returns. "What the---" I began.
But I never finished my sentence. I collapsed onto the ground. The world got darker, and darker.
"What's happening?!" Alannah screams.
Her voice reverberates in my head.
I hear Charlie's voice. "What's going on!?"
The world went black.
