Alright. I decided, I'm not going to think about Charlie romantically until the investigation is over. Nope, not once. Starting now.
Okay, fine. Starting now.
I walked across the room to where Mr. Lawrence was speaking to some cops, Charlie was standing behind me. "Mr. Lawrence," I called as I approached him. "Can we have a word?"
"You have one word," he said impatiently.
I smiled politely. This was one man that I would not stand up to. "I'm afraid, Mr. Lawrence, that we'll have to share more than just one word. That is, of course, if you want your family back."
Okay, fine. I'll stand up to him, a little. But only.
Mr. Lawrence scowled. He grabbed onto my shirt collar and pulled me close. "I'll do whatever it takes to get my family back. Are we clear?"
"Not yet," I said calmly. "We still haven't had our word."
"We won't have it," he said angrily. "I would much rather talk to someone with feelings."
I heard Charlie step forward, but I grabbed her arm.
"I'm sorry if I offended you, Mr. Lawrence. I don't know what got over me."
He pushed me away. "I told the police I wanted the best on this. I trust their judgement, and that's the only reason I'm not kicking you off this case. But be warned, one more step out of line, will end in the loss of your job. Have I made myself clear?"
My smile widened. "Crystal."
He stormed off without another word.
I turned to Charlie, who looked disgusted. "What a---"
"I know," I said, letting go of her arm. "But we have to deal with it."
Charlie looked at the ground. "I love you," she said quietly.
I gulped and looked around. "I love you too," I said with a wink.
Alright, fine. Starting now.
Back at CBI headquarters. Like home. More like home than my real home. At least I'm not alone here.
"Hart!" I yelled as I entered my office.
"Yes, boss?" Randall yelled from across the room.
"Can you visit the captain's quarters within the next thirty seconds?" I asked as I sat down at my desk.
He entered the office and shut the door behind him. "Do you need something?"
"How was the date?" I asked, my eyes on the paperwork piled on my desk.
Randall frowned. "You're interested in my dating life?"
"Why shouldn't I be? Alannah was dating a crazed criminal."
"So, how was it?"
"That bad, huh?"
"She was huge, wasn't she?"
"Massive. Remember the president that got stuck in the bathtub?"
"Yeah. She was his fatter sister."
"You sure know how to pick 'em."
"It was a blind date."
It was strange...talking to Randall as if he was an actual human being. He seemed to be enjoying it, maybe a little too much. Can't say I wasn't enjoying it myself...
"Thank you for the chat, after I speak with Alannah can you take her to see the old lady who lived next door? Maybe she heard something."
"Sorry, I guess I didn't make myself clear. Yeah, get out."
I winked at him as he left, obviously confused.
"OH! And call Alannah in for me, will you?"
Not even I knew what I was doing. But I had a feeling that I should be checking in on everyone. I hadn't talked to them in weeks, after all. Well, except for Charlie...
