"YOU DID WHAT?!" I yelled angrily.
"We went to see the guy's wife. What's wrong with that, boss?"
"WHAT'S WRONG WITH THAT?!" I shrieked. I glanced around, realizing we were drawing stares. I grabbed onto their ears and dragged them into my office. Slamming the door behind me, I faced them. "What happened?! Tell me everything!"
Alannah looked over at Charlie sheephishly. Charlie nodded. "We knocked, she answered. We asked if we could come in, she said yes. We walked in and told her everything. Then-"
"Wait! Stop right there. You told her that her husband is dead?" I asked, shocked.
"Yes, of course we did!" Alannah butt in.
My eyes widened. "Then what happened?"
Charlie rolled her eyes. "Nothing. She started crying and told us to get out."
I took a deep sigh. "Look," I said calmly, "I don't know if you missunderstood her or something, but she already knew he was dead."
"What do you mean?" Alannah asked, suddenly very perky.
I glanced around for a moment and then said, "We called her the moment we found the number, she knew this morning. Three hours before you guys showed up."
"Wow, why do you think she acted so surprised?" Alannah asked, looking at Charlie.
"Maybe it was something else that we said that surprised her."
"What else did you say?" I asked, my interest slowly growing.
"Nothing," Charlie said thoughtfully.
I looked at the ground for a moment. "You were clear, weren't you?"
"What do you mean?"
"Like, you told her that her husband was dead, right?"
"Yes, yes we did."
I looked back at the ground and began pacing. My interest had become curiosity. What girl forgets a death so quickly? Suddenly, an idea popped into my head. "Drugs," I said.
"Huh?" Charlie and Alannah said in unison.
"What if she like...drugged herself or something?"
"Why would she do that?" Charlie asked quietly.
"Maybe to shove out the memories of killing him?" Alannah asked.
"Or maybe, someone else drugged her."
"Why would someone do that?"
"So she wouldn't remember what she saw," I said.
"You think she may have witnessed the murder?" Charlie asked, completely shocked.
"I'm calling Randall," I said as I reached for the phone.
"Where is he anyway?" Alannah asked.
"Talking to the sister, but he should be done by now. Who knows? Maybe she was helpful!"
