He noticed her looking at him for the third time as he waited in line at the checkout counter.

What, he thought.  Oh, probably the facial tattoos.  It wouldn't be the first time.

Sometimes he hated to go out in public, but those were the only times he could pretend to be free.  Other times, Webby held the leash for him and his wife and daughter.

They followed the traveling freakshow all up and down the east coast during the summer months, and right now they were in North Carolina.  Jane set up the tent just past the official midway where the independent contractors set up.  A small convoy of freaks banded together and attached themselves to this Rockwell Amusements show, going with them to church parking lots and public fields for events.  Sometimes crowded in among them, sometimes just outside of them among the Romani, and sometimes alone - they bided their wares with everything from mediums to live burlesque shows to...the tattooed man and the bearded lady.  They were throwbacks, and they knew it.

But they made enough to get gas to the next spot and food for the weekend.

The End
