He stopped once we reached his apartment, letting me off and wandering off to make coffee. I looked around the place, trying to remember some of it, any of it. But there was still nothing. I sat on the couch and buried my head in my hands.
"I don't remember any of this"
Brody sat down, giving me my coffee. He was quiet as I sat there with my head in my hands til I let out a sigh.
"It's okay, y'know. There's no point forcing it or anything"
"I know, it's just..."
He got up and went over to his desk. "I'll leave you to it. Make yourself at home"
And with that, he started drawing something. I wandered over after a while, still not remembering anything, and nosed over his shoulder. It looked like... building plans.
"I thought you worked for Brendon"
"Yeah. Doesn't quite pay the rent, though. This is my real job"
I kept watching what he was doing. He sort of slowed after a while, sitting back with a blank look on his face. He threw his pencil down and stormed off to make himself a coffee.
"Fuck it. There's no point designing buildings for people that probably won't make it out the breeding pits"
A frowned a little, partly at what he’d said and partly at a familiar scent coming from his desk. He was too busy with his coffee to really notice anyway, so I picked up the pencil. I felt his eyes on me. Oh so now you’re interested. I sniffed the pencil and was met with the musty scent of a wolf.
"Smells like a wolf"
"Smells like you, actually"
"That was one of the things you scented when you were over"
He sat up on the counter, drinking his coffee and I looked around again. I shut my eyes, trying to remember something about this place but there was nothing. Not even the fuzz I’d gotten used to whenever Brody mentioned something we’d done. I tugged on my hair a little, opening my eyes again.
"I need... I need something to help me remember"
"The bed's through there" he said, pointing. I think he was joking but...
"D'you think that'd work?"
He shrugged. "I wasn't being entirely serious, y'know" he stood, a growl rumbling from his stomach, "but I should probably sort this out first" he said, prodding his stomach.
I nodded, sitting on the couch again. He came back about ten minutes later and at least he didn’t smell of fresh kill. I didn’t have time to congratulate him on not killing anyone, though. I was still trying to tease my memory into coming back. Why was I so sure it even existed? I mean, this could still be some trick of Brendon’s. I mean, imagine me wanting to be bitten. That’d never happen in a million years. Would it...?
"Can I get you anything?" Brody asked, making me jump.
"I'm fine, thanks"
"Sorry" he said with a tiny smile.
I rubbed my eyes, stretching out on the couch as he sat in the armchair. I felt his eyes on me again. Someone should tell him that’s kinda creepy. I rubbed my eyes again, starting to feel kind of tired.
"Mmm, just fed up"
He shrugged. "You can go sleep if you want"
I smiled a little and he let out a tiny chuckle.
“I won't do anything, I promise. I'll go back to drawing buildings for people that'll never use them" he said, smiling weakly.
"It's fine" I smiled back just as weakly, trying to get comfy on the couch.
"You can sleep in the bed, y'know"
I shook my head and he shrugged. The last thing I saw before I fell asleep was him wandering back over to his desk. I didn’t sleep well. Everything was fuzzy and all it did was confuse me. I woke up feeling more tired than I’d been when I went to sleep. I shuffled off to pee, seeing Brody still sat at his desk but just used that as my cover story for getting up. I watched kind of curiously as he drew various people. Granted he was drawing at vampire speed so it wasn’t taking him very long, but he’d so far drawn Brendon, that little kid vampire, a guy that looked kind of familiar and...me.
"What're you doing?" I asked.
"Being bored" he said, working on another drawing.
“I recognise him" I said, pointing at the guy that looked familiar.
He finished the picture he was drawing and put it with the picture of the familiar guy. "We were living with their pack for a while”
I nodded a little and he gestured at the kid vampire.
"He's Brendon's... I dunno, I think he's supposed to be his son or something. He's the one who made you forget me"
I nodded again and he pointed to the picture of me. It was of me eating for some reason. Yeah, totally not creepy.
"That was when we went to an Indian restaurant before I came back here and started working for Brendon"
I didn’t say anything, studying the picture. I... I could sort of picture it but...
Brody shrugged for some reason. "I have a photographic memory, I was just..." he went to screw the picture up but I didn’t let him.
He glanced at me.
"I... I kind of remember this"
"You told me how the last time you'd had Indian before that was on a pity date with some girl you used to like, and I joked that we should've gone to a Chinese instead"
"I don't remember you, but I remember talking about Hallie"
"Hallie..." he hummed, "you never told me her name"
"Guess I didn't feel the need to"
He nodded. "I s'pose you don't remember me telling you what happened last time I went for Indian food"
He shook my head.
"We could always go back there, if you want"
"It's up to you"
He rested his chin on his hand, looking at the pictures. "Brendon said to mimic the memory you felt most connected to me in... I guess we were closest when we were living with the pack" he said thoughtfully, almost frowning.
I arched an eyebrow at him.
"I dunno how to get away from Brendon without being hunted down again, though"
"Wouldn't he just let you go if he's willing to help you, though?"
He rested his head on his hands. "What about Dustin? Brendon reckons he's stalking me now 'cause he knows I got you out of there"
"Don't go back?"
"When I'm sure that Dustin's not after me"
"How do you know Brendon's telling the truth, though? I wouldn't put it past him to lie about something like that"
"And I wouldn't put it past Dustin to want some kind of revenge for setting his pet free"
I nodded a little and a thoughtful look appeared on his face.
"Though there's someone else he might be after" he frowned at the picture of that guy. I think his name started with L.
"It's complicated, but if he was careless, Dustin might've seen him hanging around by the breeding pits"
I nodded and Brody sort of stared at the picture.
"I'm sure he'll be fine"
He hummed, pushing the picture away.
"Anyways, d'you have a good sleep?" he asked, apparently sensing that I didn’t really know what to say.
"Sorry. Should've given you a blanket or something"
I smiled a little. "It wasn't that"
He shot me a questioning look.
"I guess I was still trying to remember you or something"
I sighed a little, almost expecting him to give me a hug or something.
"Anything I can do...?" he asked.
"Have you got any painkillers?"
He nodded, going to the kitchen to fetch some. I thanked him when he handed them to me, swallowing them and trying not to notice the tiny smile on his lips. I made my way back over to the couch, shutting my eyes. Brody was quiet and I felt myself start to fall asleep. I heard Brody move into the bedroom and for some reason in my half-asleep state, I decided to follow him. He was lying on top of the covers, half asleep and I’m not sure why but I went and snuggled up to him. He snuggled back, kind of surprised and I buried my head in his neck. He kissed the top of my head which sort of woke me up a bit. He didn’t notice since his eyes were closed shut and I tensed a little, realising what I was doing. He let go of me, opening an eye and I relaxed.
"Sorry. Don't know how I ended up in here"
"Don't worry" he said sleepily.
"I can go if you want"
"S'up to you"
I started getting up but... Did he want me to stay? "Unless..."
He looked up at me.
"Do you want me to stay?"
"S'up to you" he said quietly and I looked him in the eye.
"Do you want me to stay?"
He let out a tiny sigh. "I'm not gonna make you stay if you don't want to Fate"
"Brody, do you want me to stay?"
He nodded a little and I lay back down. He didn’t snuggle up to me but I could tell he wanted to.
"You can if you want, y'know"
"Just didn't wanna make you feel weird..." he mumbled.
"Y'never know, I might remember something"
He gave me a small smile, snuggling up to me. I didn’t really snuggle back since I didn’t actually know the guy but at least letting him cuddle me would make him feel better. Right?
