I’d had the suspicion that something was wrong for several days. Something just wasn’t right; I could smell it in the air. I kept my eyes glued to the screens playing the footage from the CCTV which was I spotted it: Brody. I bit back a growl, studying him for a moment. He seemed to be focused on the few humans within the breeding pits. Dustin seemed to sense my agitation as I watched him appear beside Brody. I studied their lips, reading every word.
"Boss wants to see you"
Brody glanced at him.
Dustin shrugged and Brody bristled a little.
Dustin grabbed his arm, dragging him inside. I smelt the hunger on Brody the second he was dragged through the door. Perhaps it was time to test his limits...
He kind of grinned at me. "Hey buddy. I missed you. See you've been busy out there"
"Indeed. What are you doing back here?"
"Came to tell you I ditched Fate. And that in the five minutes I've been standing out there, I've had a change of heart. Got room for another team member?"
I glared. "Why do I not believe you?"
"I dunno, why don't you believe me?"
I glared again. Perhaps because the two of you have been a constant source of annoyance for me.
"Genuine question, Brendon"
"What triggered this change of heart?"
He shrugged. "Dunno, but the fact I haven't fed in about three days probably has something to do with it"
"Go, take your pick and bring them back inside" I smirked a little and he went off, coming back with a girl.
I checked over her, making sure she wasn’t one of the females we had allocated for breeding. He watched as I checked her over.
He hesitated a tiny bit before doing so. I watched him, looking for any weakness.
"You must be hungry still. Pick another" I said once he had drained her completely.
He dropped her cold body almost uncertainly. Was his limit really one small human girl?
"Pick another, Brody"
He went and picked another, a male this time, and I chuckled.
"Drain him as well"
He nearly managed it, letting the man fall to the floor once he had lost consciousness. Blood still coursed through his veins.
"I said drain him"
"There's only so much blood a guy can stomach, y'know"
"Sure you don't wanna share?"
I kept up my scowl and he rolled his eyes, picking up the man again and finishing him off.
"Want another?" I smirked.
"I thought as much" I said, still smirking.
He arched an eyebrow and Dustin giggled.
"Can I play with him, boss?" Dustin asked, not really waiting for an answer as he crept towards Brody.
"Awh, c'mon, he'd be fun to play with"
I scowled, noticing Brody trying to keep the blood down. Pathetic. Dustin giggled again as he noticed and Brody glared at him.
"Pretty please can I play with him?" Dustin asked, turning on the puppy eyes.
"Fine" I sighed and Dustin’s face lit up.
Brody remained expressionless as Dustin grabbed his arm, throwing him against the wall. He grunted, putting his arms out to stop himself slamming into it but he underestimated Dustin’s speed. Within seconds, Dustin had thrown him at another wall. I slipped off, knowing that would easily occupy Dustin for hours. I made my way to what appeared to be a small office. I knocked on the door but didn’t wait for an answer before walking in.
“Such formality as always” Marina chuckled, not looking up from what she was doing.
A human lay crumpled in the corner of the room and the smell of blood was thick in the air. She had fed recently.
She looked up then, a look of shock flashing across her features for a second before being replaced by a smirk. “Send him up”
I nodded, making my way back to the CCTV room. Dustin had pinned Brody to the floor and it was almost a comical sight, seeing a small child pin down a fully grown man.
“She wants to see you”
