The Step-by-Step
For a moment, I panicked but I told myself that I could hardly die, not again. It wasn't much comfort, but it allowed me to take one uncertain step forward. Another step and my heart constricted, as if someone was wringing it out like a dirty cloth. I wheezed and took another step and felt my resolve wilting like a cut violet in the sun. I clutched my chest, thirsty for oxygen and thirsty for an end to the pain that scorched my bones like balefire. I thought of Fox, her laughing eyes, her mocking smile. It wasn't that I loved her or anything of the sort, but I needed something to focus on, and it seemed prudent to choose something from this life rather than my last. I wanted to help her, and I wanted someone at my side again. I took another step. Feeling bile in my throat I took another step, then another, but then I tripped, fell.
I came to in darkness and found myself on a hard gritty floor, I felt its solidity under my hands and smiled. I looked and I called "Fox!" to the edges darkness. Suddenly a match flared, illuminating her stern features. She peered down at me, put the match to lantern she held in her other hand and said: "What the hell took you so long?"
