The crowd was buzzing, either from the alcohol or Christmas excitement, or both, and it seemed to fuel us. We did a couple of upbeat Christmas songs, followed by a few slower ones to dance to and finishing our first set with 'This Christmas'. I could spy Sam from where she'd been watching, leaning on the wall next to the stage. She was smiling, so filled with love that it almost hurt me to look at her, and it filled me with the same feeling. God, all I had done to her and she still looked at me like that? What had I done to deserve such perfection?
When our first set was done I headed straight over to her.
"Hey," I murmured. "What did you think?"
"You are exquisite," she smiled, wrapping her arms around me and placing a kiss on my forehead. "But then you always are."
"I think you're exaggerating, but thank you." I smiled, kissing her gently and murmuring against her lips.
"No," she kissed me back. "I'm not." She laced our fingers together. "Dance with me."
"Always. But I need a drink first."
"Alright then. Let me get you a drink."
She raised our intertwined hands and kissed mine, before gesturing to the other side of the room.
"Ali and Alex had a table over there for you all. I'll meet you there."
"Alright." I stole one more kiss from her and then headed through the crowds. I saw the rest of the band crowded around the table, and tapped Liam on the shoulder. "Hey, what's going on-?" He stepped aside and I screamed. "ANNA!"
She threw herself on me and hugged me, grinning.
"Hey Cara, thought I'd come and surprise you."
"Well you managed it! How are you? How's your mum, and your dad?"
"Good, good, it's okay. He forced me to come out, but I'm really glad he did. You guys are amazing!"
"But how are you getting back? The trains stop early because it's Christmas Eve!" I frowned.
"I'll get a taxi." She shrugged. She obviously hadn't thought it through but I was so glad that she was here.
"I wish you'd have told us! We've all got presents waiting for you at home!"
"Oh it's okay. We'll sort it another time." She smiled. "We said we'd sort presents after Christmas anyway, so I didn't bring yours."
"Hey... Anna, hey," Sam appeared and smiled when she saw Anna. "When did you get here?"
"Just before their first set."
"Merry Christmas!" She smiled at Anna, and then passed me my drink. "There you go."
"Don't I get one?" Alex interrupted, leaning forward over the table.
"Get your own sis." Sam chuckled. "Anna I assume you've met Alex?"
"Er yes, we've met." Anna smiled.
"She's still a little startled that I called her sweet cheeks," Alex laughed, throwing her arm around Anna's shoulder. "I'm not in to women Anna; that's Sam's department. All about the men."
"Yes, yes, we know sis. Alright, I'm going to steal Cara for a dance, if you don't mind."
I smiled at her and felt her hand slip around my waist.
"Yes, go on! Show us all how it's done." Anna grinned. I rolled my eyes at her, smiling, and allowed Sam to take me on to the dance floor. She spun me around and I laughed, falling in to her arms. We swayed, noses brushing, until I couldn't take the heat anymore, and kissed her. Her fingers scratched against my scalp as she ran her hands through my hair, and I pressed closer to her instinctively.
"Have I told you how much I love your long hair?" She murmured in to my ear.
"No, but I'm glad. I love it too."
"Get a room," we heard, and released each other enough to see that we'd been joined by everyone else. Anna was laughing, Alex smirking, and I rolled my eyes and pulled Sam back to me. Those two seemed like they were getting on then.
"You look gorgeous too by the way."
"You're really going all out on the compliments tonight," I chuckled in to her ear before placing a kiss on her pulse point. "Christmas spirit?"
"Mmm." She span me around and then dipped me, making me giggle. "No. I just missed you."
"I missed you too."
The second set was about to begin, and Sam was kissing me goodbye.
"Stay..." I murmured against her lips.
"Make her get a taxi."
"Tempting, but I promised I'd go." She kissed me again and pulled away. "I'll see you tomorrow."
"Alright," I gave in. "Tomorrow." I gave her a last kiss and let her go. Alex gave me a hug goodbye and waved to everyone, and then they were gone.
"Well, Sam's sisters a bit of a whirlwind isn't she?" Callum chuckled.
"She's totally got a thing for Liam," Ali winked. Liam blushed and concentrated on getting his guitar ready.
"Cara, what on earth are you doing out here?" Liam found me outside, where it had been snowing for a while now. I had thrown on my leather jacket and was watching it fall, thinking.
"I just needed a bit of air, you know?"
"About Sam?" I turned and stared at him.
"How did you know?"
"You're always thinking about her. She's never not on your mind Cara. You're in love with her."
"I know," I sighed.
"Why is that something to sigh about?"
"Because I'm not... because I don't want to hurt her again." I shrugged. I'd told her that before, but it was starting to feel like an excuse. I was scared to be with her again because I wanted to be perfect, and I wasn't.
"Cara, relationships... love hurts. That's just how it works. If it didn't hurt it wouldn't be worth it. God you two are so stupid. How can you not see what the rest of us see?"
"What?" I frowned.
"You two are so perfect together. Neither of you are perfect people but you're perfect together. You should be together in every sense of the word, and you should stop holding back. Because both of you are going to get hurt in this relationship, but if she's worth it to you...?"
"Then what on earth are you still doing here? She said she'd be home tonight. Alone. Go, you giant moron." I hugged him and hurried inside to say goodbye to the others. I felt a moments guilt for rushing off so soon, especially because of Anna, but when she asked where I was going and I said 'Sam', she almost shoved me out of the door.
I headed through the streets, glad that I'd brought a pair of boots to change in to. Ali had promised to take my shoes home. When I finally reached Sam's door, having almost slipped on the stairs in my hurry to get up there, I knocked. There were no lights on, and I waited a few minutes before knocking again. Nothing. God she probably wasn't even back yet. I hadn't seen her car... I shivered and pressed myself to the door to keep out of the snow.
I managed about ten minutes before I couldn't feel my fingers. I should go home, wait until tomorrow... I was about to start heading down the steps when I saw car lights. I heard a door and peeked down the stairs. Sam!
"Hey," I shivered, grinning.
"Cara? What on earth are you doing here? You look frozen."
"Let's get you inside." She hurriedly opened the door and ushered me inside. "What on earth were you thinking? I could have come back and found you frozen in the doorstep, like the little match girl." She took my hands in hers, rubbing them to keep them warm.
"I had to tell you." I said through chattering teeth.
"Tell me what? Come on let's get you next to the heater."
"No I.... I had to tell you that... that I can't do this. I can't..."
"You can't what?" She stepped back warily, looking hurt."
"No, no. Listen. I can't hold back anymore. I was so stupid and I don't think I could ever apologise enough, but if you've forgiven me then I can try to forgive myself. But I can't do that without... without letting you know that I adore you. I love you. I always have and I probably always will. I can't imagine a life without you and I don't want to. I want to wake up next to you every day, and fall asleep with you every night. I want to kiss you and hold you and, god, one day I even want to marry you..." I stuttered. "I am in love with you." She stared at me, and I could see a tear trickling down her cheek. "I had to let you know that before tomorrow. I didn't want to spend Christmas without you knowing how I feel."
Sam stared at me, her lips twitching in to a smile.
"Please say something Sam."
"I'm in love with you too." She surged forward, her hand immediately slipping under my jaw and bringing my to her lips. "God I love you so much it hurts."
"I know." We kissed frantically, barely getting in the words. "I know how you feel."
"You're freezing," She shuddered when my hands slipped under her shirt and grazed her stomach.
"No more sorry," she growled, slipping her hands down and lifting me clear off the floor. I yelped and wrapped my legs around her waist, and my arms around her neck.
"When did you get that strong?" I gasped as she moved us down the hall.
"I've been working out." She released me and I fell with another yelp, landing on the bed. She was on me again in a split second, her thigh pressing down in just the right place. "Tell me again."
"What?" I groaned, barely able to concentrate as her tongue trailed down my neck and dipped around my collarbone.
"Tell me again that you love me."
"I do." I gasped, catching her before she went any further and bring her face level with mine. "I am in love with you." She kissed me again, slowly this time, drawing out a mewl from me.
"That's the best Christmas present I've ever had," she grinned, and I chuckled before bringing her lips back to mine.
