"It looks like everything is in order. A couple more days rest and you'll be free to go." The doctor smiled at me. "And your friends are waiting outside."
"Thank you." I smiled.
He went out and I glanced over at my mum.
"How're you doing?" She asked.
"You just heard, it's fine." I replied.
"Not what I mean and you know it. I'm talking about you and Sam..."
"Mum I don't want to talk about-"
"There she is!" I heard Liam crow and looked around to see him charging at the bed with a bouquet of flowers.
"Woah woah woah, stop the stampede!" I called and he practically skidded to a halt by my bed.
"Brought you some flowers." He said, putting them on the table as the rest of the gang arrived at my bed.
"So I see. Thanks, they're lovely."
"Aw shucks you'll make me blush." He joked and then pulled out some chocolates from his bag. "And these are for you Mrs Gramms. We figured you deserved it after giving up and kidney and everything."
"Well thank you... Liam?"
"That's right. I can see I made a good first impression."
"Well you're certainly memorable." My mum smiled and Liam blushed.
"Cara, I think I'm going to become your new step dad!" He looked at me and winked. My mum went bright red and I laughed.
"Leave my mum alone Liam, you've got a girlfriend... right? She's your girlfriend by now isn't she?"
"She is. And when you're out of this hell hole you can meet her."
"Yay." Jak muttered sarcastically. I glanced at him and frowned, as did Anna and Megan. Liam rolled his eyes.
"Jak and Ali don't like Amanda."
"Well I can't wait to meet her. It's about time you had someone."
"Alright alright, I know it's been a while."
"That's not what I meant." I chided.
"I know chuck." He grinned. "So where's Sam?"
I saw Anna and Megan fidget out of the corner of my eye.
"Not here." I replied.
"Because Cara broke up with her." My mum chipped in. I glared at her as everyone gaped at me.
"What? Were you high on meds or something?" Liam asked.
"No. We argued, I ended it."
"Cara that is the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard... you two are... what the hell were you arguing about? Please do not tell me it was about the kidney thing?"
"I don't want to talk about it."
He shook his head and sat down.
"That's insane. You two were so..."
"Liam!" I glared. "I don't want to talk about it."
"I have something that might cheer you up Cara." Ali said.
"I'm not upset." I lied.
"Well anyway, I have something that'll make you smile."
"What?" I asked. Ali and Jak both smiled at each other and Ali put her hands on her stomach. "Oh my god... you're keeping it?" I grinned.
Anna and Megan cheered and even Liam was momentarily distracted, grinning and clapping his hands together.
"We wanted to wait to tell everyone till you were feeling better." Jak said.
"I can't believe it, that's amazing." Anna grinned, hugging Ali and Jak. Megan did the same.
"Congratulations." My mum called from the other bed.
"Thank you." Ali smiled. "And baby will have a big family with all of you as aunts and uncles."
"Awwwww!" Anna grinned. "I'm going to be an aunt!"
I smiled and looked at Ali's stomach. Somewhere in there was a child growing and one day it would be smiling at me. The image I'd had so much recently of Sam with our baby flashed through my head and I closed my eyes to try and blacken it out. It made a sharp pain pull through my chest when I thought of that now. The future I'd destroyed. But there was some part of me that wouldn't back down. I'd been protecting Sam...
"Cara are you okay?" Ali asked and I opened my eyes.
"Yes." I smiled. "Just thinking what to get my my niece or nephew when they're born."
"Well don't go mad. Blip's dad is already preparing to shower him or her with presents."
"Blip?" Liam chuckled. "Interesting name. Not what I'd go for."
"Blip because the heartbeat sounds like that on the monitor. We had a scan yesterday." Ali smiled looking down at her stomach. "I'm three months."
"You'll be popping soon." My mum said. "But at least there'll be no more sick."
"Oh god I can't wait." Ali grinned.
Everyone began chatting and cooing round Ali, but Liam leaned in to my ear.
"Cara, you and Sam... isn't there any chance of you getting back together?"
"I don't want to talk about it now."
"Alright then. You can talk about it later, when everyone but me has gone."
"I'm not going until you've told me what's up. Seriously Cara every time someone says her name you look like you're being punched in the stomach. You obviously still love her..."
"Later." I hissed as Anna looked at me curiously. "Anna, when are you heading to America then?"
"Can't wait to get rid of me huh?"
"Obviously. I want your flat." I joked but everyone stopped chuckling and seemed awkward. "What?"
"I mean, you can take over the rent if you want... but I thought maybe you and Sam..." The look on my face stopped her. "Sure yeah, we'll talk to the estate agents. We're going as and when planned, so you'd best be well enough to come and see us off!"
"Of course I will be. Doc says I'm out of here in a couple of days."
I nodded and yawned.
"Oh, you're tired. I guess we'd better go. But we'll come and see you later okay?"
"Okay." I smiled, settling down.
"Cara." Liam muttered as everyone began to edge away.
"Later Liam. Tired." I murmured.
"Fine." He grumped. "But only because I care."
"Sure sure..." I murmured, felt him kiss me on the forehead and then go while I dozed off.
