I tapped my heels anxiously on the floor, watching the hospital staff glide by, too busy to notice me. Sam squeezed my hand.
“Ready?” She asked.
I nodded and followed her through some white double doors in to an operating theatre. Surgeons in masks stood around a table.
“If you’d like to climb on,” Sam said. “They can get started.”
“Should you be here?” I asked.
“No.” She smiled.
I climbed on the table and looked down.
“Shouldn’t I be wearing… you know… a hospital gown or something?”
“No no. This’ll do just fine.” One of the surgeons said, removing their mask.
“Sure, who else do you think is going to do this?”
“But… you’re not a doctor.”
“So what? I wanted to help and you wouldn’t take my kidney. So I’m going to do the operation, and give you my kidney while you’re open.”
“What?” I gasped. “No!”
“And then we’ll be together forever!” She grinned. “Right Sam?”
“Who am I to stand in the way?” Sam smiled. “Go ahead.”
Anna climbed on top of me, scalpel in hand.
“Don’t worry Cara, when you wake up Sam will be gone. It’ll just be you and me. Like it should have been.”
She raised the scalpel over her head, smiled, and brought it down sharply in to my stomach.
“Cara! Cara! Baby what’s wrong?” I was screaming, writhing in the blankets. I blinked, the room was dark and arms were circling me. “Oh… god… it was a dream.” I felt her kiss my shoulder gently, rubbing my stomach with her hand. “I… I was having my operation… and you were letting Anna do it…”
“Well of course I was.” The light flicked on and Anna climbed on to me, naked. “You’re mine remember?” And she poked the small scar on her belly where her kidney had been removed.
I woke up, sweating.
“Cara, baby?” Sam was shaking me. “Are you okay?”
“Bad dream.” I murmured and felt my stomach twist. “Ugh.” I rolled out of bed and ran for the toilet, throwing up in to it and shuddering.
“Cara, Cara…” Sam crooned, rubbing my back. “What was it? What happened in your nightmare?”
“I… you were… operation…”
“Hey, hey, you don’t have to be worried about that. I’m going to be there with you, we could ask Anna to come-“
“No!” I threw up again. “No…”
“She could get tested at the same time as me.” Sam reasoned.
“No. No.” I was crying.
“Have you stopped throwing up?” She asked.
“Yes.” I muttered.
“Come on then.” She picked me up. “God Cara, you’re so light.” Her eyes were concerned as she placed me in the shower and turned on the water. “Let it warm baby.”
“Come and join me?” I asked, washing my mouth and spitting.
“Um… I already showered.”
“Oh. Okay.” I nodded and she smiled before closing the door. I washed, climbed out of the shower and cleaned my teeth to get the taste of sick from my mouth, and then went back in to the bedroom. “Sorry about that.”
“It’s okay, it’s not your fault.” Sam murmured, coming towards me and kissing me gently. I grinned against her lips and slid my hands down her waist, over her hips… “Cara…” She warned.
“What?” I said playfully, sliding my hands over her bum and back to her hips. “You know I can’t resist you in a t-shirt.” I smirked, looking at her in t-shirt and pants. She smirked back, and raised her eyebrows as she looked over me. “And I’m naked. That should about do it for you.”
“Cara you threw up about twenty minutes ago.”
“Ah. Okay. Good point.”
“Maybe tomorrow okay? Once you’ve got the hang of this catheter thingy.”
“Thingy?” I smirked.
“Shush. Get dressed.”
I did as she asked, and the pit of worry inside my stomach grew with each item I put on. Then Sam threw an arm around my shoulders and we went to the car. She held my hand every moment she could on the drive there, and as we sat in the waiting room, her thumb stroking circles across my skin was comforting, the only comforting thing.
“Nervous?” The doctor asked as he led me to be prepped.
“Nah, I do this all the time.” I rolled my eyes. He chuckled.
“Cara? Cara?” Sam’s voice floated through my sleep and I groaned. Waking up I saw her sitting at the side of my bed.
“Hey. They said you were tired after the op and that you wanted to lie down. Anna’s here, and so is Megan.”
“What? Why?” I murmured, sitting up. I felt funny and looked under the sheets. I could see the catheter in my abdomen. “Oh.”
“Yeah. Going to take some getting used to that. They said when you feel fully awake they can take you through the steps, teach you how to do the machine at home. Anna and Megan are getting tested right now.”
“Megan’s getting tested?”
“Yeah I know. So kind; she’s only known you a couple of months. I think it was more in support of Anna than anything.”
“Cheers.” I joked.
“I’ve already been tested. They’ll get back to us soon hopefully.”
“Oh, your mum called while you were sleeping.”
“Mum… what did she say?”
“She’s coming here. To be tested. I said I’d book her a hotel.”
“You’re an angel.”
She smiled and kissed me gently on the head.
“Are you still tired?”
“No. I think I’m ready to learn all about the monster machine… just… don’t let Anna or Megan see me till I’ve done it okay? I want to prepare.”
“Okay, if that’s what you want. I’ll go get a nurse.”
She kissed me again and then disappeared through the curtains.
