“What’s this?” I asked, going to open it.
“Read the envelope first.” Anna said, reaching for her drink.
“Ok…” I read the words she’d written and looked at her, brow furrowed. “Why?”
“Because it’s what I think about…” She took a deep breath and shrugged, trying to find the words, “Everything that has happened. And I’d rather you read it when I’m gone.” She paused and then grinned, “So you can’t pummel me.”
Everyone chuckled except me.
“I can still pummel you even if you’re in America. I’ll just get Megan to do it.”
Anna pursed her lips.
“Just leave it till I’ve gone ok?”
The whole atmosphere had gone silent and awkward. It was Sam who broke it.
“Well, we’ll just enjoy your company for as long as possible. Both of you.” She smiled and I relaxed, although the letter in my hand was weighing me down. I wondered what she could possibly have said in the letter that we hadn’t already said.
“Thanks Sam.” Megan and Anna both replied, and then turned to each other to have a private conversation, giving Sam and I a moment too.
“Relax.” She muttered in to my ear, softly. “It will just be a goodbye note…” I frowned at her and shook my head. I knew Anna. She had too much theatricality about her to just have said goodbye simply. “I have to go to the toilet. Are you going to be ok?”
“Of course.” I replied and she kissed me quickly on the cheek before going. As soon as sam was out of sight Megan practically pounced across the table.
“So! How are plans for Sam’s birthday going?”
“Good. In fact I was thinking we could go shopping tomorrow to look for our costumes. I found a place that does this sort of thing...”
“What sort of thing?” Anna asked.
“Oh yeah, I forgot I hadn’t told you guys yet. I know it’s short notice, but we’re doing a theme. Like, show/circus/burlesque type thing. I don’t know, Lexi explained it better but people will be wearing masks and fabulous outfits, as many sparkles as possible…”
“And how is Sam going to fit in with this?”
“I’ve got it all figured out. I’m going to take her out, then when we get back I’m going to have her change and come downstairs. I’ve already got her outfit.”
“Pinstripe smart trousers and a matching waistcoat. That’s it. Apart from some killer heels. And the mask of course, but she’ll get that when she comes downstairs.”
“Hopefully. I have to change downstairs. Really fast.”
“We’ll help.” Megan offered.
“So what sort of thing were you thinking of getting?” Anna asked.
“Well, I kind of already spotted something, but I have to try it on. And you guys have to get something so…”
“Sssh, she’s coming back.” Megan warned.
“What are you three whispering about?” Sam asked as she sat down, a grin on her face.
“You of course.” I replied.
“Ah yes? And what have I done that’s so… fascinating?” She asked. The slight pause before she said the word made me shiver slightly, in a pleasant way, and I saw Megan give a small smile. Had she noticed, or was she affected? Anna was drinking her tea and seemed not to have noticed. I frowned a little at Megan’s reaction, but then pushed it aside. Sam raised an eyebrow as she waited for me to respond, and sipped at her drink.
“Cara was just telling us about your morning.” Anna put in. Sam almost spat her drink across the table. Anna and Megan giggled. “Guess that means it was interesting?” Anna pursed her lips and grinned at me. I could tell I was blushing beetroot red.
“I was not telling you about this morning Anna,” I said, pretending to be annoyed.
“I thought it was my job to tease Cara about our sex life.” Sam added, choking a little. I patted her on the back and she nodded in thanks as she got her breath back.
“Morning sex huh?” Megan said. “Bet that’s as exciting as it gets now you’re both middle aged. Except for the ice of course.” She winked.
“Hey woah!” I chided. “I’m not middle aged. She’s the one who’ll need the walking stick.”
“I’ll have you know I’d look excellent with a walking stick.”
I smirked. Unknowingly, Sam had just given me an idea for another accessory to her costume.
“Besides, I can think of a few things that would make even you two blush.” I teased.
“Whatever can you mean?” Anna replied in mock indignation.
“You two are at it like rabbits. I can always tell whether you’ve had sex or not by the way you answer the phone. And let me tell you, you’ve had a lot.”
Both of them blushed scarlet and I grinned in my success.
“Don’t worry you two. Cara’s not exactly innocent.”
“Don’t you dare…” I warned her off telling them any of the things we’d done.
“Not sure I want to know what perverted things you two do…” Anna stuck her tongue out. “Although I’m pretty sure you’ve got some sort of Fifty Shades of Gay thing going on.”
We all howled with laughter and earned a couple of dirty looks from other customers.
“Well I’m not aware of a locked room in my flat, but you never know.” Sam chuckled.
“Is that something you’re in to?” Megan asked. I gave her a look and she shrugged. “Just curious.
“We’ve never done anything like that.” I replied.
“And I would never want to hurt Cara. Some of that stuff is just… weird.”
“Have you read it?” Megan asked.
“No.” Both of us answered.
“Have you?” I asked. She nodded and shrugged.
“I didn’t think it was that bad.”
“Woah. Anna you’d better watch out.” I winked. Anna blushed and tried to ignore my comment.
“I reckon she’s thought about it.” Sam teased.
“You guys are gross…” Anna rolled her eyes.
“Well you never know. Maybe the Hollywood lifestyle will seduce you while you’re there.” I replied. “Just don’t do drugs ‘kay?”
“I’m not stupid.” Anna stuck her tongue out.
“Not with a first you’re not clever clogs!”
