Cara didn’t eat much pizza that evening, she took several mouthfuls when she knew that I was watching her and making sure that she was at least eating something but it looked to be with great effort that she did this, and I was doubtful as to whether she had eaten more than two slices.
“Are you okay?” Megan asked me as we walked back to my flat, for I had been subdued since we left the restaurant.
“Yeah, I’m just worried about Cara.”
“Worried? Why?” she asked, “she seems fine to me, yeah she is missing Sam but that nothing to be worried about, she seems to be coping okay.”
“I’m not worried about her because of that Megan. I am worried about her health,” I said with a sigh.
“Her health, but why? She seems perfectly healthy to me.”
“She hasn’t been eating much, she’s been getting muscle cramps a lot and her mood is more unpredictable than normal…. I am just fretting is all, but I have told Cara to make an appointment for tomorrow and I am going to meet her at ten and go with her.”
“Well then, why are you worried?” she asked as we stopped outside my door and I began to unlock it.
“Because what if it’s something ….bad?” I asked, knowing that I was probably blowing the whole thing out of proportion.
“Then going to see the doctors is the best thing she can do, even if she is too stubborn to admit she needs to go to the doctors,” Megan comforted as we climbed the stairs and open the door to my flat.
“Sorry. You must be sick of me stressing out about other people…”
“Not at all Anna,” Megan said pulling me into a hug, “She is your best friend, and if you weren’t concerned then you would be a terrible best friend to her. She is lucky to have you Anna and so am I.”
A warmth filled be at these words and I pulled Megan into a tight embrace and kissing her passionately, pressing her lips firmly against mine. “You know… I bloody love you Megan Warwick,” I breathed.
“I love you too” she breathed back before kissing me tenderly again.
“So are you staying here tonight?” I asked Megan, who was sitting on the couch sipping a hot cup of tea whilst I pulled on my pyjamas and set my alarm for eight the next day.
“Probably not if it’s all the same Hun, I promised I would meet my friend Angie tomorrow and have a catch up as I haven’t seen her in months.
“That sounds lovely Megan, you have a nice time wont you,” I said walking over to the couch and sitting down next to her.
“I’d have a much nicer time if you met up with us later on…”
“Why?” I asked, “I wouldn’t have thought you would want your girlfriend there. I would have thought you would want some alone time with your friend.”
“Yeah I would normally but she has this new fella, and he is at her side like every minute of every day and I just know that he will be there and I will be like a third wheel.”
“I tell you what. I’ll text you when I am done at the doctors with Cara and let you know what I am doing. I hope you don’t mind, its just I need to make sure that Cara is alright first.”
“That’s fine with me,” Megan said before giving me a peck on the lips, setting her empty mug down on the table and getting to her feet. “I’ll see you later babe and I will text you to let you know that I have got home okay,” she said kissing me again and heading out the door.
Once Megan had left I made myself a cup of tea and clambered into bed. It was a cool evening so it was quite nice to snuggle under a warm duvet with a cup of tea clasped in my hands. My phone buzzed about fifteen minutes after Megan had left and I scooped it up to check who was texting me and smiling as Megan’s name flashed onto the screen.
Got home safely. Sleep tight lovely and don’t worry about Cara, everything will be alright. Love You. M x
I smiled at the text and quickly responded,
Love you too. Night. Anna xx
I then turned off my phone and settled down to sleep.
My alarm went off at eight am the next morning; it was with a groan that I clambered out of bed and into some clothes, before flicking on the kettle and making myself a cup of tea and some breakfast.
I text Cara as I was setting off the next morning and told her that I would meet her outside her flat in about ten minutes. She was waiting outside when I arrived wearing her black leggings and a baggy black and white tshirt dress, with a big brown belt around the middle and some brown ugg boots which I recognised to be the ones that I had bought her for her birthday a couple of years ago.
“Hey, you okay?” I asked her giving her a quick hug as we set off up the road and towards the doctors.
“Yeah I’m perfectly fine, I don’t see why we need to go to the doctors Anna, I am perfectly healthy!” she said but it was with a note of uncertainty that she said it.
“Have you eaten breakfast today?” I asked her.
“Yes.” She replied a little too quickly.
“Liar!” I said glaring at her as we walked, “It just so happens I put an apple and a bar of chocolate in my bag before I set off, because I knew you wouldn’t have eaten your breakfast.” I rifled in my bag and pulled out a green apple and a crunchie bar and thrust them at Cara.
“Eat!” I ordered, handing them to her.
“But I am not hungry!” she protested.
“I don’t care, I want to see them eaten before we get to the doctors!”
“But we are nearly there now!” Cara argued.
“Well then you better start eating!”
