I headed up to the counter with mine and Anna's purse while Ali saved the seat. I ordered, my stomach rumbling, and waited at the end of the counter to pay.
"That'll be eight fifty eight please." I opened up my purse and paid, then routed through Anna's to get my half as I waited for the change. A receipt covered up the change part of her purse and I pulled it out while I sorted her change. Slipping my half in to my purse I collected the change and receipt from the man at the counter and the receipt I had placed on the side. I glanced at it without thinking as I put it back in Anna's purse, and paused.
"Are you alright?" The man asked. I glanced up at him.
"Yes, sorry." I turned and went back to the table.
"You alright? You look a bit ill." Ali said as she stood up, ready to order her food.
"Yeah I'm fine." I muttered and she shrugged, heading to the counter. I waited patiently until Anna appeared from the toilet.
"Hey, you ordered? I'm famished!" She said.
"Done. Here's your purse." I handed it back to her and she slipped it in to her bag.
"Oh, and your receipt." I handed it to her and she went to put it in her bag. "Just check it Anna, you know how I am with maths. Make sure I gave you the right change."
"I'm sure you did."
She rolled her eyes grinning and unfolded the receipt. Then she glanced up at me, her brow furrowed.
"This isn't..." Her eyes darted down and then back at me. "Oh."
"You're smoking again? Are you serious?" I glared at her. Ali reappeared and stared down at the two of us.
"Oh god, do not tell me you two are fighting again?"
"No, not fighting. Anna isn't fighting anything these days. Right Anna?"
"Cara, don't get all high and mighty on me. I haven't smoked for years."
"I suppose you're going to tell me that's an old receipt are you?"
"No, I bought some this morning, but I haven't smoked them. I just wanted something to relax me, and it seemed like a good idea at the time."
"So you're going to give them to me to throw away are you?"
"I think I can throw them away myself Cara, I'm not a child."
"Sure." I glared at her until she looked away.
"I'll get rid of them Cara. I didn't think."
"Damn right. Do you remember the trouble you got in to?"
"Yes I do. Now can we drop it? I'll throw them away. I thought this was going to be a nice day."
"It was supposed to be."
Ali coughed and we looked over at her.
"If you guys are done, can we stop? The food's on it's way." We looked over at the guy from the bar who was balancing our food in his arms and making his way over. He served the food and we ate together.
"So Cara..." Ali said after a few minutes of silence. "Why'd you want the dress to be a surprise for Sam? It's your birthday!"
"I know. But for my birthday I want to see that look on her face she had when she saw me in the black dress for the first time, and your pink one. It makes me happy..."
"I bet it's not just the look that makes you happy." She winked, nudging me with a grin. I almost choked on my panini laughing.
"Well, you're right about that."
"I knew it! So tell me, when she saw you in the black dress, what happened? It was that art evening right?"
"Yes. And we... you know..."
"Oh come on, if you're doing it you might a well be able to talk about it. So you had sex. Tell me you at least did it after everyone had left." I pushed her gently.
"Of course we did! Right after... behind a display." I covered my face and giggled. When I peeked through my fingers both of their mouths were open, although Ali was grinning.
"Well I never knew you had it in you." She said.
"You didn't really did you?" Anna asked.
"Yes?" I said, removing my hands and feeling the heat of a blush on my cheeks.
"No wonder you fell in love with her. She swept you off your feet didn't she?"
"Literally, yes." I laughed. Anna choked in to her hot chocolate and I felt a little bad. It probably wasn't a good idea to talk about being with Sam when I knew Anna was still...
"What else? Come on, it sounds like you two have a pretty interesting sex life. I need gossip, because me and Jak are taking it slow."
"You two haven't...?"
"No, not yet. Neither of us have been known for long relationships so we thought we'd take it slow."
"And? Are you two good?"
"More than good." She ducked her head and smiled. "I really like him Cara."
"Good. I'm glad."
"Thanks. Now stop changing the subject. You and Sam, the sexcapades."
"I'm not going to tell you everytime we've had sex because..."
"We'd be here for hours? Days? Weeks?" She winked and I shoved her.
"Alright alright, so we enjoy sex. There, I said it. Now can we move on?"
"What was the best night?" Anna asked. I glanced at her carefully. She seemed vaguely curious and unaffected. Strange...
"I- I don't know... I mean, when I danced for her... that was pretty special-"
"-You danced for her??" Ali wiggled her eyebrows cheekily.
"Not like that. It was-" I glanced at Anna, "-when I told her I chose her. But with everything else, I can't really say that was the best night."
"And it wasn't sex. Come on Cara."
"Does the best night have to be sex?" I asked.
"No, but we want to know that one."
"Ok fine. Um, either Italy, or the night after her Creative Arts thing. I don't know. There have been too many good nights... the one with the ice cube was good."
"Ice cube?" Anna asked.
"Yeah... look can we not? I don't want to talk about it any more." My insides were melting at quite a rapid pace.
"Getting hot Cara?" Ali teased. I blushed bright red, knowing that it was obvious.
"Alright, how about we talk about when you two had sex?" I poked her grinning. She grew silent immediately. "Yeah exactly."
