Ali and Liam had tried to talk to me but I just wanted out of there. Now. I grabbed a bag, shoved some clothes and my toothbrush in and left. I heard Liam and Ali yelling at Anna in the kitchen as I finally shut the front door as quietly as I could. I didn't want to give them a chance of coming after me.
"I'm guessing it didn't go well." Sam said as I got in the car. Shaking my head I leant it on her shoulder and let tears fall again. "She didn't break the ultimatum?"
"Give her time. She'll soon change her mind."
"But she didn't... what sort of a friend does that make her?" I cried. She struggled to free her arm and put it around me, hugging me close and kissing my head.
"She's confused Cara. She's blinded by her feelings for you. At some point she'll realise she's made a mistake, and she'll back down."
"The problem is, I don't know whether I want her to or not." I muttered. She was silent for some time.
"You don't mean that."
"I don't know anymore. Do I want a best friend who makes me choose?"
She was silent again for a minute as I cried in to her shoulder.
"Don't give up on her, just because she's pushed you away. I know she's not been acting like a very good friend, but it's only because she doesn't want that any more. She wants you to put her first, and this is just her reaction to you not doing it."
"Sam can we not talk about this right now? I- it's been a long day... all I want to do is go to sleep."
"Ok. Ok. We'll go home." She started the car and we drove off.
"Our home." I said with a small smile after a few minutes. Sam turned and grinned at me, then returned her eyes to the road. "Shit! I forgot to take Amy's keys back." I muttered. Sam rolled her eyes and signalled left.
"We'll slip them through the letter box."
We drove to Amy's house and I put the keys through the front door, and then hurried back to the car. I would go and see Amy tomorrow and thank her. I laid my head on Sam's shoulder and we drove home in silence.
"Would you like a drink?" She asked as we walked through the front door.
"Please." I was dog tired now but a nice cup of tea and bed sounded as close to heaven as possible in the circumstances. I went to the bedroom and dumped my bag on the floor, grabbing my toothbrush and heading forr the bathroom. I brushed my teeth and pulled off my leggings. Then I headed in to the bedroom and pulled off my top. I put them in a neat pile next to my bag and started going through the bag for pjs. I heard Sam come through the door behind me, heard the tea cups wobble, and her placing them on the bedside table. Then as I stood up with m pjs held triumphantly in hand she wrapped her arms around me and kissed me cheek.
"I just want you to know, I wanted you here before you had to move in."
"I know." I whispered back, the pain of the evening hitting me again.
"Good. I just wanted to check. Tea's on the table. Don't let it get cold." She went to the bathroom. I drank my tea greedily, aware that I hadn't had one of Sam's cups in a while now. It was delicious as usual. Then I got in to my pjs and lay down. I was out like a light as soon as my head hit the pillow.
I'd been watching Sam as she slept, her breathing peaceful, her face inches from mine as it had been when I first woke up. My leg was trapped by hers, and I really needed the toilet, but I was content to lie here as her eyes finally fluttered awake.
"Morning. Have you been awake long?" She asked.
"No. But I need the loo, so if you want to release me...?" I winked and nodded my head at her legs.
"Only if you'll come back."
"Just try and stop me." I kissed her and went to the toilet. When I returned, she was sitting up grinning at me. "What?" I asked, climbing in beside her.
"I just love you."
"I know, and I love you too. What do you want?"
"What do you mean?" Her eyes were still mischevious.
"You obviously want something. You've got that mischevious look on your face." I snuggled up to her and laid my head on her shoulder.
"Alright. I was wondering, how you felt about going on holiday with me? If you'd like. I mean, only if you want to. Don't feel pressured."
Wow. Going on holiday with her?
I'd always wanted to go.
"Where's the catch? Come on seriously, you've just offered me my dream holiday!"
"Well actually there is a small catch. I'd have to work on two of the days. There are some art openings I have to go to... but it means dressing up and drinking champagne... would you be willing to do it?"
Willing? Would I be willing? OF COURSE!
"Oh I don't know... sounds like hard work..." I winked at her. "Of course I'll go... when is it?"
"In a couple of weeks. I was going to ask before but I thought you needed time with... well, you know... but now that you're living with me, I couldn't go without you. Well I could, but I'd bloody well miss you."
"I'd never give you the chance. You might come back with a hot italian draped round you."
"Never." She kissed me.
