"Why? You've already met her. And talked with her. It can't get much worse for you. Me on the other hand..." Sam grimaced as she held the door open for me and I slipped in to the restraunt.
"She's your mother. She loves you anyway."
"And she's going to love you too." Sam spotted her mother and placed her hand lightly on my back, reassuring me and guiding me.
"Cara, nice to see you again. You look nice." Donna said, getting up and drawing me in to a brief hug. Then she kissed Sam on the cheek and sat back down. "Sam, your show last night was fantastic."
"Thank you mother."
"And I do hope you've forgiven us both for the little deception?" Donna asked me.
"Of course. I admit I was a little shocked but it's all good. I understand why you did it."
"Do you?" Donna pursed her lips and I felt Sam move a little next to me.
"Umm... well I think so." I put in, worried because Sam was acting a little nervous next to me.
"And what exactly do you think?"
"That you wanted to see who I was and what I acted like to someone who I didn't know about the relationship and as a person before you dropped the 'mum' bombshell. You wanted to make sure I was worthy of your daughter." I smiled at Sam who gave me a smile back that didn't quite reach it's normal standards.
"Close, but not quite. I wanted to make sure you weren't simply dating her for her money."
I glanced at Sam to ask whether her mother was joking, but the look on her face as she glared furiously at her mother said there was no joke.
"Her money? I mean, I know I'm just a student and all, but I would never ask her to pay for things. She works hard for her money and I love that about her."
"I don't mean the money she gets from the gallery. I mean her inheritance."
"Well I don't know anything about an inheritance..." I said, giving Sam a look to show her I was right about me having a worse time at the meal than her, "...but whatever it is, I'd feel the same about it as I do about what she earns. It's hers not mine and I don't want her money or charity. I just want her."
"There mother, can we just leave it now?" Her mother looked as though she were about to start up again, but Sam glared at her and she was silenced. "Thank you. Now let's order."
"What was all that about?" I asked as Sam took my hand outside the restraunt. She gave me a look and stopped walking."What? Don't give me that look. That's the second time I've been ambushed by your mother. What's going on?"
"Cara, I don't want to talk about it."
"Well I do."
"Cara!" Her own face washed over with shock at how loud she had shouted. People stared at us. "She's just worried about me. That's all there is to it." She muttered, her voice softened back to normal.
"That's not all there is. I didn't realise we lied to each other now." I muttered, starting to walk off.
"Cara please." She stopped me, taking hold of my hand and trying to kiss me but I leaned away. "It's just something from my old life. Don't be mad."
"I am mad. But I get it, you have a secret. If you don't want to tell me I guess that's something I'll have to deal with."
We started walking again, but this time in complete silence.
"Guys I'm back!" I called as I walked in through the front door.
"We're in here!" Liam's voice replied from the kitchen. "Ali's cooked us some food!"
"Great." I muttered, and dumped my bag inside my room. Then I turned to see if Sam was following. She was standing in the doorway. "Are you coming?" I asked, feeling awful but still angry at her for not telling me what was going on.
She nodded and followed me down the corridor and in to the kitchen.
"So what's cooking?" I asked as everyone came in to view.
"Lots of things. Pasta, vegetables, you name it." Ali grinned.
"Well we only ate about two hours ago, but I'm sure I'll squeeze something in before tonight. And speaking of tonight, I'd better go and get changed. Be back in a bit. Is Anna coming down for food?" I asked, worried about her reaction to my news earlier today.
"I'll go and ask." Ali said, and disappeared. Sam followed me to my room and sat on the bed.
"I am sorry. About the ambush." She said when the door was closed.
"It's ok. I guess I didn't expect you to tell me everything right away."
"I will. Just not now."
After all, had I really told Sam everything?
