"We're out of bread!" I yelled across the crowded room, waving the empty bag. "If anyone wants to go fetch some, that would be great!"
"Go on then." Shaun groaned. He clambered up and slouched out in to the corridor.
"Someone go with him and make sure he doesn't fall asleep in the gutter?" I asked.
"I'll go." Leanne volunteered and hurried after him. Anna looked after her with a slight hint of desperation. She'd hardly looked at or talked to me since the incident this morning. That was clearly a source of some awkwardness between us. And without Sam here next to me, I felt the awkwardness like an elephant in the room.
"I'll be back in a minute." I muttered and hurried to my room. Sam was there, getting dressed, because she's spent the night in some borrowed pyjamas. "Are you leaving?" I pouted.
"You have a room full of friends to take care of, and as much as I'd like to stay, I have a show room that needs to be managed. But," She smiled as she kissed me, "I'll see you tonight if you'd like."
"I would like. But... I have a lot of work to catch up on. You've... distracted me somewhat."
"I can't have that. Tomorrow then. I have an art show in the evening. Perhaps you'd like to come? It's smart, but I don't mind what you wear..."
"Oh you have to let me dress up. I'd love to come."
"Nothing too revealing... I don't think I could concentrate on sales if you were wandering around with clients staring at you... I'd be too jealous." She whispered, stepping closer as I leaned on the wardrobe.
"What's too revealing? Are we talking, this much?" I pulled the top down with one crooked finger so she could see a hint of breast. "Or... this much?" I pulled further. She kissed me, pinning me against the wardrobe door so that I had no room between the solid wood and her. When she let me breathe I used the time ask her a question."Is this what happens when you're jealous?"
"Sometimes." She muttered as she concentrated on pulling my top off.
"Screw the clients, I'm wearing the thing that gives me as much cleavage as is decent."
"Screw decent." She moaned as she rubbed my breasts through my bra and then kissed me again. Then she surprised me by pulling away, wrapping her arms around under my bum, and lifting me up. I almost squealed, but it was quashed as she pushed me back and I wrapped my legs around her waist for security. I was enveloped in the moment, so much so that I almost forgot where I was. I was about to moan when laughter from the kitchen broke through the haze of arousal, and I clapped my hand over my mouth. Sam grinned and carried me across to my desk. As she lay me down I was aware that I couldn't make a sound. I put my finger on my lips and she nodded, then started undoing the belt that held up my jeans.I lay back and let the haze envelop me once more.
"Remember, eight is when the doors open." Sam reminded me as she kissed me goodbye.
"I'll be there." She gave me a last kiss on the cheek and the hurried down the path and on to the pavement.
I watched her go and then returned to the kitchen.
"You were gone awhile!" Shaun said. "We got back fifteen minutes ago!"
Leanne was sitting on the sofa with Anna. They and the rest of the group were all watching Jeremy Kyle, food on their laps.
"Yeah, I was on the phone, sorry."
"It's alright. Here I saved you some food." He passed me some bread and cheese. I stuck it in the toastie maker.
"So, your girlfriend is nice."
"What?" I thought he'd seen her leaving, and then I realised he was talking about last night. "Oh right. Yeah she's incredible."
"Very nice person. How'd you meet again?"
"In a club."
"Uhuh. And she swept you off your feet?"
"I wouldn't... ok sort of. But she's hot right? I mean who wouldn't?"
"Well she's not really my cup of tea, but yeah, I can see how she might be attractive in the lesbian world..."
"Shut up, she's gorgeous. I mean, did you see her eyes?"
"What about them?"
"They get dark sometimes, so they look almost black. It's amazing..."
"I just hope you know what you're getting in to. She's older right?"
"What's with the third degree? Yes, she's older. But she's sexy, funny, intelligent, and she likes me."
"Oh I know."
"Well then." What he'd just said sank in. "Wait, how do you know?"
"You can tell from the way she looks at you. She gets this, I don't know, light? in her eyes, and a look that makes me think if anyone messed with you... well she seemed pretty strong to me."
"She is." I blushed, thinking of earlier when she'd lifted me like a twig.
"What's that look for?" He poked me, a cheeky grin on his face. "What have you two been up to?"
"Nothing..." I sought to cover for myself. "Just... well I was out with her the other night and... promise you won't tell?" He nodded. "Well I was meeting her, and these guys were where we were supposed to meet, and they were drunk and I think on drugs... and they started following me, one of them grabbed me..."
"Jesus C, have you told anyone?"
"Not even Anna?"
"She's busy... besides, as I was saying, Sam arrived and warned them off, and when they guy was being all tough she punched him straight in the face and then hurried me off to safety."
"Jesus. Cara, you could have been in serious trouble..."
"Yeah I know... but she was there, you know, so everything was fine."
"Well I'm glad she was. Because that is not a situation you should ever be in." He was being protective and gave me a hug.
"Thanks. But she had it covered."
"Yeah. Like I said, she looks strong. And protective. You'd think she'd known you for forever."
"I feel like that sometimes. Like we've been together for ages because we just mould so well..."
"Oh yeah, there's been moulding has there?" He grinned, winking.
"Shut up, you know what I meant."
"Has there been... moulding?"
"What makes you think I'd say, even if there had been?"
"So there hasn't?"
"No." I was lying through my teeth. But it wasn't anyones business. I didn't want to tell them. If they found out, they found out, but I certainly wasn't telling them. They could work it out themselves.
"Are you sure...?" He started to ask, but then sniffed. "Hey C, I think your toastie's burning."
"Oh shit!" I cried, pulling the top open. It wasn't badly burnt so I slapped it on a plate to cool a little before eating. Shaun laughed and turned off the toastie maker.
"It's alright. You can still eat it."
"I know." I sat on the work surface and started to watch Jeremy. Liam came over.
"Where'd you go?"
"Phone call. Any of these lot look like clearing out soon?"
"Nope. And we can't buy them all food."
"Don't worry, I made it clear that breakfast was the only meal included. They'll go."
