I had definitely seen something, just before the panic had started. It looked like a girl, human shaped, floating high up next to the ceiling. And then the lights had gone mad and fire had flared up and for a moment I lost sight of this girl in the confusion. When I looked back after everything had settled down, she had gone.
I watched as Jeremy and Katherine danced together, but my mind was on what I had seen. Had I seen it? Or was I just seeing things in the heat of the moment? Should I say something?
I decided remaining quiet was the thing to do. No one was hurt and the girl was gone... but if I saw her again I wouldn't be so quiet.
"Long time no see Demi." I heard the deep tones behind me say and turned to see Brad standing there, a glass of champagne in his hand.
"Brad. You look good." I smiled, taking the champagne and sneaking a sip. He took it from me with a grin and put it to the side.
"So do you. But you're not legally allowed to drink yet, no matter how good you look."
"Neither are you. You're not twenty one yet." I teased.
"Touche. I won't tell if you won't."
"Seems like a fair deal."
"I'll throw in a dance too."
"Thought you'd never ask."
As I danced with Brad I realised how long it had been since I'd seen him. Well, it had been a while since I'd seen everyone, but Brad had been the longest. He was the eldest of all the Avengers children, and then it was me, and then Jason. As a result, the three of us had been closer for most of our younger lives, and that still hung in the air when we met. I looked over at Jason now. He had found Brian, Brad's brother, and was talking to him. And Jeremy and Katherine were still dancing with each other, while Brianna stood watching, a small smile on her face.
"Your sister's grown." I offered as a way of conversation, not sure what to say after so long.
"Yes she has. We all have." He smiled down at me.
"Well we've had time to. Nothing major ever happens anymore. Not with our parents watching over everything."
"It will soon be our turn. They can't defend the planet forever. At some point, we will have to take over."
"Oh yes? So you'll be saving the world in a lab coat will you?" I grinned.
"If that is where I'm needed." The song ended and I pulled away a little. The thought of our parents not being able to defend the world any more was a little nerve racking."I think my father wants me. I'll see you later." With that he was gone.
"Demi, come on, I'm going to cut my cake." Katherine grabbed me as I watched Brad walk away.
"Ok, I'm coming." I smiled, and followed her. Her mother was waiting by the table. "Hey Pepper. I've missed you!" I grinned, hugging her.
"Demetria, I've missed you too!" She smiled, kissing my cheek. "How do you like the city."
"It's brilliant thanks. Freedom at last." I laughed.
"You'll have to tell me about it. Right now though..." Pepper put her arm around Kat's shoulders. "Everyone, it's time for the birthday girl to blow out the candles."
Kat grinned round as everyone came over. I looked surreptitiously over at Brad as we congregated to sing, and saw he was talking quietly to Nick Fury.
"Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday dear Katherine, Happy Birthday to you!" We all sang, and Kat blew out her candles in front of her mother and father.
