The Nightmare

I ran down the street though I could hear them catching up to me. My legs were screaming for me to stop but I knew if I did I wouldn't live to see the next sunrise. I turned a corner and was about to look behind me when I ran into a wall. Dead end...

I turned around to examine my surroundings. Maybe there was something here I could use. Nothing. I could fight but that wouldn't make the outcome much different. I heard a laugh and I look back up to see my pursuers blocking the only exit. They had their hoods on so I wasn't able to see their faces.

"Thought you could get away from us did you?" one of them said in a deep voice. "Your time is now up. You failed your end of the bargin now it's time to pay the price." He unsheathed his sword and swung it at me.

I sit straight up in my bed, breathing heavily. Persperation forming on my brow. I look around the room and try to calm myself down. I'd been having nightmares like this for the past couple months. Ever since the Brotherhood found me.

"I'm still alive." I say to myself. I look out the window. It's still dark. "I'm not dead nor am I being chased. I'm with the Brotherhood." I absentmindedly finger the white sash that I always keep with me.

I grab my cloak off the ground and put it on. Silently and shoeless, I go to the window and climb through it on to the roof. Once there I sit down and look at the sky.

My code name is Ebony. I don't know what my real name is. Ebony is the only name I can remember anyone ever calling me. Two years ago when I was thirteen I was found by some farmers that live in a village far from where I am now. I have no idea who or what I was before that. It wasn't until I was found by the Brotherhood that I was given a name and a purpose.
