The thud as the knife hit the floor made both Suki-Mae and Derabble jump. Arabella however had suspected that someone was watching her, because the hair on the back of her neck had been raised for a little while. And now she knew where the watcher was. Swiftly, she took the knife and slipped it under her dress.
"What was that?" Suki-Mae was looking wildly around her, worried.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to make you jump," Arabella was trying to think of an excuse, "I threw a pebble at the tree, sorry." Derabble looked suspicious, but Suki-Mae relaxed.
"Don't do it again. You about gave me a heart attack."
"Are you sure miss?"
"Yes. This pastie is amazing." Arabella looked away from Derabble and pretended to be engrossed in eating. He watched her for a moment, and then shook his head and began to dance again. Arabella waited for a moment, and then stood up, wandering absent-mindedly over to the tree, then slipping quickly behind it.
The light of the moon lit her way as she began to climb the tree, looking for foot holds in the rough bark. She reached the end of the trunk and began to clamber in to the boughs. Then a rough hand grabbed her outstretched arm. She almost yelled, but another hand covered her mouth.
"Don't scream," said a man's voice. She nodded and he pulled his hand hesitantly away. She turned to face the voice.
