“I’m not sure we should be doing this.” I whispered to Melissa as we stood in my backyard peering into the windows of the living room, watching as my step father got drunk. Melissa smiled at me.

“Akira it’s your home, he won’t think nothing of it.” She said lightly.
I held back my scoff and looked back to my drunkard stepfather. He didn’t look like he missed my mother much but then neither did I; I just want to find out what happened and who took her and why. It’s not like she’s made of money or anything.
“We need to go inside.” Melissa said to me. I froze and avoided looking at her.
I shook my head.

"No we can’t. I don’t want him to know that we’re looking into this. And if we go in there, he’ll get suspicious." I lied smoothly. She looked at me for a couple more beats but shrugged and turned away from the window. I followed her when she walked to the front door and knocked.

“What’re you doing?” I hissed at her. She put her finger to her lips and waved me away. I quickly shuffled backwards as the front door slowly creaked open and Gavern peeked out at Melissa.

“What do you want?” He snapped at her. Melissa frowned in concern.

“I heard about what happened to Miss Riley. I just wanted to express my deepest
sympathies.” She said to him in a concerned tone.
Gavern’s faded brown eyes softened as he looked over Melissa. I shivered.

“Thank you Miss…?” He waited for Melissa’s name. Melissa smiled and extended her hand; Gavern opened the door wider and grasped her hand. “Lara Smith.” Melissa lied. I frowned.
What was she up to?

“Well thank you for expressing your concerns Miss Smith.” Gavern said with a smile. My lip curled at the sight of his alcohol and drugged rotted teeth.

“Oh it’s not a problem. Do the police have any leads on what happened?” She asked curiously. Gavern shook his head and let go of her hand.
“No. They don’t even know the last place that she was seen.” He sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. Melissa nodded and slowly backed away.

“Well I’ll just get going. I sure hope that you find Miss Riley.” And with a last wave at him she scuttled away and motioned for me to follow her. I jogged after her and ducked at the same time to avoid being seen.

“What the hell was that?” I asked her as I stopped next to her puffing for breath. She chuckled and tucked her hair behind her ear.
“I was getting information from him. He’s the only source and suspect we have at the moment so I had to do something.” She said with a proud smile. I sputtered.

“Source? Suspect? Melissa we’re not detectives!” I exclaimed. Her smile turned mischievous.
“Not yet Akira, but we will be.” I frowned at her. Did Zane do damage to her brain when he beat her up? Melissa tugged on my arm.

“We have to get back to school before the teachers notice that we’re gone.” She said as she pulled me toward her car.

We made it back just as the bell for interval had rung and the students poured out of the class and headed to their lockers.
Melissa and I walked to her locker; I waited as she got her books out and placed them into her bag. When she was done we headed in the direction on my locker but as we were passing through the hall I caught sight of  Denise talking to a student in the hall.
He stood around 5'10, with short chestnut brown hair, and a thin swimmers build. I looked at his eyes and saw that they looked...well black a very dark endless coal black.
I shivered and went to move on, but Melissa caught sight of him and froze. He winked and smiled at her and Melissa looked like she was about to melt into a puddle. I frowned and looked to Denise to see her smirking to her self.
What the hell just happened?
I shook my head and grabbed onto Melissa's arm and tried to pull her away, at first she resisted but with another smile from the male she turned and walked away.
Great just what she needs, another trouble maker pulling at her heart strings.

The End
