...oh holy crap you're the creator of this site. whoooooa thanks man. Ummmm hi!

protagonize: author profile thumbnail for bfd "stephen erikson, raymond e feist both great authors, would love to have the imagination and magic with words like feist. love nanak the little dude with the magic sack of oranges. read every book of his. also like david gemmel, simmon scarrows books are well written. anyway i just started writting like three weeks ago when i found this site. the site is brilliant, would really appreciate any tips on improving my style of writting as to be honest i have not got a clue what i'm doing. im an unemployed doorman who only just passed his english exams at school. i'm trying to write a book on being a doorman would love some feedback. if you fancy having a read so far let me know and ill email you what i have got. would really appreciate it. thanks"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Faltarego "Yeah, I'm using Firefox. The Shift-Refresh did the trick. Thanks!"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Faltarego "Hi, Nick... A quick question: Did you intend for the text of the "Profile", "Stories", and "Authors" main buttons (the big ones at the top of each page) to shrink when you hover over them? Because the "Comments" button doesn't do that. The shrinking text looks kinda weird. I think the green highlight is all you need.

Thanks.
"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Kooch "cool updates. It looks like you've really listened to user feedback, nice to see. keep up the good work."
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for ganga "Great job with the enhancements, Nick! I can see that you have come back from Hawaii all charged up!

BTW, noticed in one of your comments about "single author stories" being planned. What exactly does it mean - that only one author can continue to branch them? Sounds like an interesting addition nevertheless. (from starting out as an "Addventure" type site to including linear stories and now this!)

protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Rac7hel "LAKSJDFKAS!!! My last minute of editing time just ran out and then I found an error. Will you go into A Xong and change "expoiting" to "exploiting"?

Preesh.
"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for DrPinch "Loving the improvements so far. The comments section especially is much more funtional. Good work and thank you."
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Rac7hel "Oh neat... the comments page gets a thumbs up too"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for redhat "I like the new pic throwing gang signs. WESTSIDE BIATCH!"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Faltarego "Nick... Many thanks for all your efforts (not to mention speedy work). Your continuous improvements to the functionality of the site are heartily appreciated.

Also, thank you for the "featured author" status. I was surprised, considering the short amount of time I've been on the site, but very gratified. It's nice to know that I can still write, and that people like to read what I write. Thanks so much!!

Thanks a bunch. I know I'll use the jump-to feature a lot...
"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Rac7hel "NICE! That is going to be quite a useful tool."

On a glossary of forgotten species i was wondering is it possible to change the title of my chapter from Species 13 Himilayan Puffballs to Species 13 Ancient Himilayan Puffballs because then the alphabetical order isn't ruined. Thanks if you can, Oh well if you can't.

protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Faltarego "Hi, Nick... Greetings from Halifax--the Canadian one, not the British one, though I use enough British vernacular (I do love it) that one might think I was from U.K.

I'm really impressed with this site. It's functional, attractive, and fun to use. I've been having a great time, and I'm beginning to feel like I'm getting back to writing again. The feedback has been awesome. Quite a supportive community developing here.

I have a couple of site functionality suggestions for you (you thought perhaps I wouldn't?):

1) It would be nice to be able to read comments in "threads." In stories, for example, it would be nice to have a "reply to comment" button, and then be able to read a "conversation" in its entirety.

Likewise for comments on profiles, though it would have to be implemented differently, I suppose. Perhaps something akin to Facebook's "Wall to Wall." I'd like to be able to read a conversation without jumping back and forth from one profile to another.

Unlike on many message boards and newsgroups I've sampled in the past, people here have interesting and intelligent things to say, and I'd like to read the conversations as conversations.

2) Someone already mentioned this in an earlier comment, but I'd like to second it. It would be great to have list of all the chapters or branches in a story, so you could click to return to a specific place.

Thanks for all your hard work.

protagonize: author profile thumbnail for DrPinch "Hey, thanks a lot for the honour of Editor's Pick, I really appreciate it! The Glossary really has taken off, which is tremendously pleasing. I hope folk continue to contribute... I'm even considering turning the best additions into a real project (with each author's permission, natch), which is great considering I only put it up as a bit of a throw away idea. Will you have a go at adding when you're back from Waikiki?

Have to say my first week on the site has flown by and been both very enjoyable and very helpful in many ways. Glad I stumbled across it. The standard is generally quite high, and any tool that can help improve technique is welcome.

I do have some reservations about how things work, some of which I've already expressed, but really they are minor niggles.

Thanks again. Enjoy the rest of your trip.
"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for ganga "Have a great time, and a wonderful birthday! Didn't expect you to pop in today though ;)

Vancouver was nice and warm yesterday, but it's back to cloudy and rainy today!
"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for surreal78 "Just about to head out to the beach in Waikiki. The weather here is amazing... beats Vancouver in April hands down. Working on my tan (hah) and thinking about things to add to the site while I soak in the sunshine...

... and yes, I know, posting on my own profile is lame... I'm not sure I really want to add a facebook-style status thingy, though, so many other sites already use that. Maybe just a Twitter hookup so your status can show on your profile. Who knows... just tossing ideas around.
"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for seldom "that sounded a bit suck-up didn't it?

next time ill be very rude and it'll hopefully balance out.
"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for seldom "Yep, I think you could have a maybe a welcome board and a discussion board. As a newcomer you have to hunt around quite a bit to find out how the site works and I think a lot of newbies might be giving up before they've fully got to grips with how it works.

Like that you might change the rating system because I'm finding it a bit weird - as you know lol

oop Actually just rated a story I wrote myself. Gave it a 5. ;) and am waiting for people to come along and disagree.

Am having lots of fun tho here so thanks to all you guys who set this site up - it is great! All the stuff I said before are just niggles really.

Sometimes don't think people say thanks enough thats all

Previous versions were nice and simple. 2007's had all settings tweaked by default to Absurdly Secure: It wouldn't even allow my modem to dial out at first. Figured it might be the firewall causing me Protag woes. Found a thread online re framesets and JavaScript perhaps being blocked by a firewall ad-blocker. Remembered only then I'd had to configure this thing just to get into Hotmail. So, created a special permission for Protag - disabled the ad-blocker - and voila!"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Burndtree "Cannot believe it, Surreal78! You've seen my woe-is-me's re trying to login and post from home. It was the ad-blocker on my firewall! Hah! Now...if only I had something to post tonight, aside from this."
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for DrPinch "New rating system, that's cool. I don't really have a problem with this one, but I can see why some people would...

Generally though, am loving the site - great idea! Very addictive.

Two things:

1. The ads are weird! I know you have to make a buck to keep it going but, seriously, money isn't everything and a lot of them cheapen the whole idea. Get some proper, relevant, advertisers interested at least...

2. Why do I get the feeling you are always watching me whenever I'm logged in? Is it because you are? Oooooooooo! Hehehehe.

protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Rac7hel "You can put Remorse, Epic Nursery Rhyme and Death in Singsong into the poetry category... and take off taboo, action/adventure and mystery, respectively."
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Rac7hel "Just put it right on the front page where that big advertisement is... !"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Crymzon "Exactly.

A reviewing page would also give the journalists of us a chance to get their hands dirty. I know I'd be up for it.
"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Rac7hel "Yeah, I think a hip-happenin' discussion board might entice people to be more active. I told someone to check it out, and he looked around but didn't do anything, because "it didn't look like there was much poetry on there." I told him there would be plenty of poetry if he'd just come on and start writing some, but I don't think he's come back yet.

If there were a nice friendly looking discussion going on, people could just join and start talking, ask questions, and so on. We could welcome them :)
"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Crymzon "Hey, erm I had a random idea and thought this was probably as good a place to stick it as any.

How about adding a section which writers can review each others work? Not so much a separate blog but something more obvious. People might be more likely to read the lesser featured stuff if they read something like this first. A discussion board or something. I dunno but its an idea.

Oh and having a yearly awards with votes/nominees picked by the other writers might be fun too. Doesn't need to be a real prize just something on the site. A hall of fame or something.

Just something running through my mind. Not a lot runs through there so I'm quite pleased with myself.
"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Rac7hel "Someone already mentioned this, but I'll reiterate. It would be so nice to have a list of links to all the previous branches of the story on each page. I do lot of clicking previous previous previous, back back back, etc."
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for ganga "Hi Nick, I had emailed you last night about my fonts (bold, italics) getting lost when I copy/paste them to the Protagonize Editor, but it seems to work fine now! :) Did you fix it already?! Thanks!"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Rac7hel "ahhh... $*%! @^$@ @&!% ^&%% ^!&##@#^%* $%%$!*$@^!#^ &#$@i"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Rac7hel "I just wanted to let you know that I think the previous chapter teaser is awesome!"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Amo1143 "Thanks so much!!"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Nosferatu_Man23 "you mean email you what I tried to post?"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Nosferatu_Man23 "yes and yes."
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Nosferatu_Man23 "Still didn't work. Could it be my internet browser?"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Amo1143 "Hey Nick,
I hope you read this before the message I sent you with the body of the post. I tried to post again and this time it took it. I forgot to tell you in the message like you asked, but I use Internet Explorer. Hope this helps for future problems on the site. Thanks again!!! :)
"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for redhat "How'd it go last night? Were they blown away??"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Amo1143 "Hey Nick, I'm having trouble posting on my story. It keeps telling me I have profanity within the body, but for the life of me I can't figure out what word is triggering it. I've omitted every 'hell', piss!*, etc from it, but still a no-go. Please help!! :)"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Nosferatu_Man23 "I use Internet Explorer."
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Nosferatu_Man23 "Hey man I hate to be an onion in the ointment but I've tried to post an addventure story close to a billion times but it never does anything. (I can post chapter stories, though.)"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Nosferatu_Man23 "Now let's forget our worries with a big bowl of strawberry ice cream!"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Writers_Block "Just one more thing, probably most of the drama on this site has been caused by my antics, so I apologize to all but especially to our hardworking leader and friend Nick. I will try to cool myself down a little! But I love you all very much and I respect everyone here for their skills and creativity! But most of that respect is reserved for Nick....not trying to suck up ITS JUST THE TRUTH PEOPLE! DEAL WITH IT!

Love Jim :)
"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Writers_Block "NO WORRIES! You are totally within all your rights to do all that, and as much as I appreciate it, you don't need to apologize to me man. I've been making it difficult for you haha, so really I owe you the apology. I really wasn't even thinking when I started that whole post, but like NM says, your hard work is totally appreciated and I wouldn't purposely do anything serious to jeopardize your site or make things harder for you around here. I mean for a free site, this is wicked, and it is totally amazingly put together. So hold your apologies to me man, because really you work too hard I think to keep this going for free, but you are a good man for it!"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Nosferatu_Man23 "Hey man, just wanted to let you know that we appreciate your hard work at keeping this site running smoothly. This site is awesome and I'm glad I found it. Rock on."
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Jillian "Geez, the drama around here lately is unreal...lol"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Writers_Block "Nick, trust me, I'm not purposely doing this to make your life difficult. I'm just an amazingly large moron haha. I seriously wasn't even thinking about how it would totally screw the system. So you know take it down if you need to I totally give you permission! The only thing I was screwing with was the 5 5 5 thing with the stars with you and the girls before. Otherwise, if I've done anything else to make your life harder on this site I sincerely apologize."
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Jillian "Haha, we'll definitely be fine here on our own, so go ahead and enjoy your vacation."
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Writers_Block "Haha what did I do??"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Rac7hel "ew, look what Writers_Block did to my profile..."
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Writers_Block "Okay sorry for the many comments but ignore all that dribble I wrote, I didn't realize I could change the ratings, thank you Jillian and I've fixed it all myself."
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Writers_Block "Can you remove any of those 1's because I mean, because it wasn't me that did it really I'm all for you removing those ratings...have at it."
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Writers_Block "I probably seem like a hypocrite now saying all that stuff seeing as it was apparently me who gave him the ratings. Sorry!"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Writers_Block "Good response to the rating issue, I was very impressed."
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for redhat "Hey Nick,
I'm not overly concerned with ratings, but I've been given thirteen "1" ratings in like the past 20 minutes. Seems kind of unusual. Can you tell who's doing this?
"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Writers_Block "I notice we have a new member thats 'feeling' you"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for surreal78 "FWIW, I've put up a blog post discussing the rating topic and possible solutions here: http://tinyurl.com/6dff3c"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Adam "Wicked."
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Adam "There was supposed to be a question mark after that last question."
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Adam "Wicked. Are you also going to include something like a notepad alongside the bigger stories, so that contributors can store details like names of key characters and places.

It would save a ton of backtracking...
"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Adam "Sorry, I meant 'Nick', not 'Nik'. What sort of crazy person would call themselves 'Nik'.

The drummer from the Gay Horses, that's who...
"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Adam "Hi Nik. I love this site so much. I haven't done any collaborative writing since I was about five years old, and my best friend and I wrote a story about Homer Simpson stealing a rowing boat.

It was gritty stuff.

Are you planning to place a forum on here by any chance?
"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for ganga "I agree too that you shouldn't be allowed to rate your own story. Some sites don't allow you to rate your own stuff. I did rate one of my own stories just once - it was accidental though, and found that I couldn't undo it. Nevertheless, I gave myself a 4 for that one, to be fair. :)

Actually, the whole point of ratings here is to get an honest assessment from others on how our writing is. This is not the NYT bestsellers list after all! No offense, Nick! ;)

Also I see that there has been quite a bit of reshuffling in the rankings today! Gaelythe was reigning in the top spot all along, and now she has gone down in the rankings. So has Jait. Are good authors being handed 2's and 3's?! I have no qualms about the current top 5 list of authors though. All well-deserved!

Maybe we are giving too much importance to the ratings after all. Let's just read, write and have fun and encourage each other.

Also, while there are 1000 registered members, it looks like only 20-30 are really active, and probably about 10 who are super-active! Would like to see more writers coming out feeling encouraged.
"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for jait "Actually, I agree with that."
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Writers_Block "I have a suggestion that will probably not make me very popular haha. I'm thinking it might be a good idea to stop people from rating their own stories because obviously they're always going to give themselves a five.
I'm guilty of it, as I know a few other people are. But just in the interest of fair ratings and all....listen to me talk when I give everyone a five haha.
Btw Surreal...your weekly five rating kickback has been delivered.
"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for jait "More suggestions (sorry, I'm full of em!)

I'd really like to see the last paragraph of content from a parent branch copied into the editor for the new branch/chapter. Obviously, the author would have the choice to include it or not...

I'd also like to see an option to retag or add tags to a story at the chapter/branch level.
"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Jillian "I don't know if it's possible, but maybe just the one notification for the comment that immediately comes after your own on a profile, rather than a notification for every single comment that gets posted since your own."
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Writers_Block "That doesn't even compare to what I get, its annoying when it tells me someone commented on someone's profile that I don't even know!"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Writers_Block "I'm gunning for everyone on everything. :D"
protagonize: author profile thumbnail for Rac7hel "I think Writers_Block is after your Top Commenter spot."
