"Whenever I’m asked why Southern writers particularly have a penchant for writing about freaks, I say it is because we are still able to recognize one."---Flannery O'Connor I write Short Stories and Flash Fiction. Southern Gothic, Appalachian Rural Noir, and Dark Fiction short stories appeal to me the most. Murder, revenge, gallows humor, deception, bad love, and not-so-nice small town and backwoods folk predominate my works. A Southerner by virtue of ancestry, birth, and choice, I currently make my home not far from the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina, and the beaches of South Carolina. I've traveled extensively and lived in both Europe and Hawaii. An avid reader, I enjoy the writing of Pinckney Benedict, Tim McLaurin, Dennis Lehane, M.O. Walsh, Daniel Woodrell, Brad Panovich, Charles Portis, Hillary Jordan, and Stephen King. WRITING PHILOSOPHY I write what I like. I read what I like. I do both every day, without fail. I also read across many genres because diverse reading is the other half of the writing equation. Writing for the sake of writing a good story is what motivates me. Story prevails. Not fame or fortune. Story trumps all else. I know the vernacular and rhetoric of grammar but fail miserably at it sometimes. That's why I believe in the power of a thorough edit or editor. Lastly, I don't give in or up. Ever.
