Someone asked me a while ago, when I said that I wanted to be a writer, asked me 'What do you want to teach people with your writing?' The question took me aback, as most people just say 'Oh right cool' I thought it was an amazing and perceptive question. So i thought for a few seconds, and then said, simply 'Compassion.' I tend to write about pretty flawed and %%$ed up characters, or catastrophes because well, conflict is the way to enchant and captivate someones attention.. But you see, compassion, I think, is the most important thing. Even murderers have their reasons, their reasons why and why not, the haves and the have nots, the shoulds or the coulds and the if onlys.. To me, compassion is what makes us human and ultimately should be what writing is about.
