"As soon as he decided to live a life of virtue, he found Christ Church, "the worst place in the world to begin a reformation". Roy Hattersley, 2005 John Wesley- A Brand From The Burning" My favourite author is Graham Greene. I think it was an element of double-bluff in the way he made a distinction between his novels (e.g. Heart of the Matter) and his "entertainments" (e.g. Our Man In Havanah). Greene shows that one can write tightly paced action and comedy with a mass market appeal and still produce something with a great deal to provoke the intelect and show some artistic integrity.
